The unique origin of the Museum was a Naples, Florida middle school classroom exhibit created by students and teachers studying the Holocaust called “Out of the Ashes.” The motto of the project was “Tell your children to tell their children and their children another generation. We will never forget!” The students knew the important lessons of the Holocaust must always be shared.
In 2001, the exhibit was transformed into a museum and educational center, operating as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation. With our focus on education, our programs reach over 15,000 students each year and the Museum hosts more than 5,000 visitors annually.
At the corner of 12th Avenue South and Gulfshore Boulevard sits an exquisite example of Naples authentic charm, Historic Palm Cottage™. Under the preservation of the Naples Historical Society, the Palm Cottage™ house museum lets visitors experience the rustic, hand-crafted charm of Old Naples through guided tours where trained docents share unique insights, historic facts and colorful tales about this local architectural gem and the community surrounding it.
The oldest house in Naples (built in 1895) is constructed of tabby mortar, a hand-made concrete consisting of sand, shells and water. This two-story home was built by one of Naples founding residents, Walter N. Haldeman, and boasts 3,500 square feet of original and donated artwork, furnishings and tools spanning over 100 years.
In the 1920s Tin City’s tin roofed buildings were the hub of economic development and transport which was made possible by the construction of the Seaboard Airline Railroad. As a result, this stretch of the Gordon River became the heart of Naples’ fishing industry, including clam shelling, oyster processing, boat construction and maintenance operations.
In the 1970s, seven of Tin City’s sturdy old buildings were transformed to become “The Old Marine Marketplace at Tin City” – a colorful maritime-mix of shops and eateries.
Today, Tin City still holds its historic, old Florida charm, and is home to over thirty unique boutiques, two waterfront restaurants and a variety of water and boating adventures that are fun for all ages!
The owners of Tin City are understandably proud of their property’s role in the development of the waterfront and have joined Naples Backyard History to produce “A History of the Waterfront Museum.” Visit the history show room at Tin City and go back in time through old photos, explore the “waterfront floor map”, or simply sit and listen as locals tell their tales.
