Ise's Jingu, literally "the Shrine," is not a single shrine. The name refers to a cmplex of 125 shinto shrines that includes, besides the two main shrines of Geku and Naiku, another 14 betsu-gu, auxiliary shrines within the central sancutaries, and 109 other peripheral shrines classified as sessha, massha, and shokansha. Ise Jingu covers about 5,500 hectares. Its magnificent precincts occupy as much as one fifth of land in Ise City.
