Better known as "the Bund", the waterfront is regarded as one of the symbols of Shanghai and renowned for 52 buildings of different architectural styles, including Gothic, Baroque, Classic, and Renaissance. Being one of the Top Ten Shanghai Attractions, Shanghai Bund is a must-visit place starting from the Garden Bridge, which is at the connecting point of the Huangpu River and the Suzhou Creek, to the Jinling Road East and winding a length of 1500 meters. The most visible reminder of Shanghai's colonial heritage, the Bund attracts millions of visitors from home and abroad each year. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Bund became the financial and political center of the international community in China. It was China's Wall Street, as Shanghai's financial market became the third largest in the world (behind London and New York). Nearby were located a number of important consulates, including the British, American, Russian and Japanese. Many years ago, a "Lover's Wall" made the Bund more romantic. The 500-metre section between Beijing Road East and Yan'an Road East was packed with lovers kissing and hugging, regardless of the reproachful glances cast by passer-bys!

French Concession
French Concession
Historical landmark
1 km
The French Concession is an area of Shanghai located in the present day Luwan and Xuhui districts. In the mid 19th century after the first Opium War, Shanghai became a large center for foreign trade and in 1849 the French Consul to China, de Montigny signed an agreement with a Senior local official Ling Taotai to create a French Concession for French businessmen and traders to live. Over the next hundred years the area became home to many nationalities such as British, American, Russian and Chinese. Walking tours are very popular in the French Concession as there are so many streets to lose yourself in as you amble along. For a more peaceful stroll, walk along Fuxing road under its beautiful Planes trees planted during the concession and admire the old buildings and its less crowded shops. You can take some time to walk from Shaoxing road to Taikang road, also areas that are more peaceful, and take in the growing number of lovely cafes and shops that line the streets. The French Concession attracts the big spenders but also caters for everyone so, if you want to say that you went to Shanghai and spent some time mixing with its high society then a day and night in the French Concession is just the answer.

It is called the SOHO in Shanghai, and a nest for 29 art and design studios, 58 crafts shops and galleries, 65 antique shops and some boutiques, etc. Many coffee shops, bars, tea houses, and silk shops here are operated by an international mix of owners. They are imbedded either in the modern lanes, castles of Spanish or British styles, or the Shikumen buildings. Restaurants here are small but offer various delicious foods from many countries, such as Thai food, New York steak and burger, grill, Japanese sushi, French goose liver, cheese hot pot. Tianzifang is a vanguard of creative expressions. Every boutique shines with flashes of wit and creativity with one of a kind handmade novelty items. Tourists from overseas sit outside a café, while inhabitants hurry by. Most old walls are used as panels to exhibit latest elaborate doodles in bright colors. Tianzifang survives the surrounding city demolition by working in art. Its preservation is significant for the city’s cultural heritage.

In 1882, an old temple was built to keep two jade Buddha statues which had been brought from Burma by a monk named Huigen. The temple was destroyed during the revolution that overthrew the Qing Dynasty. Fortunately the jade Buddha statues were saved and a new temple was built on the present site in 1928.
