The Arboretum, State Botanical Garden of Kentucky is a 100-acre greenspace located on the campus of the University of Kentucky in the heart of Lexington, Kentucky. We receive over 200,000 visitors annually who can enjoy and learn about our three main features, the Walk Across Kentucky, the Home Demonstration Garden and the Kentucky Children's Garden. The Walk Across Kentucky is a two-mile paved loop featuring wild-collected native plants from the seven physiographic regions of Kentucky. Raven Run is a unique, 734-acre nature sanctuary dedicated to preserving the natural beauty of the Kentucky River Palisades and early Kentucky history. Part of the property was acquired with funds from the Kentucky Heritage Land Conservation Fund. The sanctuary is a city of Lexington park and is thus accessed free of charge. Over 10 miles of hiking trails provide access to streams, meadows, and woodlands characteristic of the area. Numerous 19th century remnants of early settlers, as well as over 600 species of plants, allow visitors to become acquainted with and appreciate the natural world. Raven Run also accommodates over 200 species of birds throughout the year. To protect the flora and fauna of the sanctuary, activities are limited to the trail system. Visitors are asked to hike only on marked trails. Regulations have been set up for visitor safety, as well as for the protection of the sanctuary. There are water fountains at the nature center, but there are none on the trails. In hot weather, please remember to bring containers of water. We request that all visitors park in the designated parking area. All visitors must sign in and out at the nature center when entering and leaving the trail system. This is for the safety of the park's visitors. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated by the staff of Raven Run.

Rupp Arena traces its beginning to April, 1971 when the Lexington-Fayette County Recreational, Tourist, and Convention Commission was formed. One of the first projects of the Tourism Commission was to determine whether a civic center—talked about in Lexington for more than 50 years—was an economically feasible undertaking. The idea was to build a complex with a mix of public and private funds—the first major public complex in the nation to combine such financing. Plans for such an impressive center for Lexington had cropped up as early as the 1920s. But it would be more than five decades later before such a complex was not just simply the talk of the town. The Lexington Center Corporation Board was officially formed in 1972 and soon the iconic complex would become a reality. Groundbreaking ceremonies for Lexington Center/Rupp Arena were held June 21, 1974. Central Kentucky, for the first time in its history, now had a complete sports, entertainment and convention facility. In addition, Lexington was now in the market for larger conventions and “big name” entertainment. Chamber President Bob Brewer would proudly proclaim it “the largest multi-purpose facility in America.” The massive undertaking would finish ahead of schedule with one local resident noting that its opening was “a new high in civic pride.” A Lexington Leader newspaper editorial of October 6, 1976 referred to Lexington Center/Rupp Arena as a “Downtown Dream Come True.” The Grand Opening was held October 7-10, 1976 and included a “hard-hat, cold plate lunch.” The invited crowd of 3,500 V.I.P.’s was treated to unprecedented fanfare. As part of the Grand Opening events, the general public could take a guided tour of the extraordinary new facility for 99-cents—and thousands of interested individuals did. Visitors marveled upon touring Rupp Arena, the “largest sporting arena in the country,” complete with seating for more than 23,000 and equipped with a specially-designed 12,000-lb. sound system lovingly nicknamed “Big Bertha.” The heart of any thriving community is its downtown—and the historic Rupp Arena and Lexington Center are truly the heart of downtown Lexington and one of the most widely-recognized entertainment venues in North America.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Lexington Opera House is one of the premiere performing arts centers in the region. Originally constructed in 1886 after a fire had destroyed the original theatre located on the corner of Main and Broadway, the “new” Opera House, designed by Oscar Cobb, opened its doors on July 19, 1887, and quickly gained a reputation as one of the most well-designed and well-equipped theaters in the nation. By the late 1960’s the venue had evolved from a grand theatre to a Vaudeville house and finally a movie theatre. It was scheduled to be destroyed when an esteemed group of local philanthropists established The Opera House Fund to raise the necessary funds for the city of Lexington to purchase and restore the historic structure. The facility is owned and managed by Lexington Center Corporation. The distinctly 19th-century ambiance is one of the most charming features of the restored theatre. With less than 1,000 seats, the venue currently serves an average of 85,000 patrons annually and remains a premier cultural destination in downtown Lexington.

Children’s Museums are the fastest growing type of museum in the country and are unique among museums for the large number of interactive exhibits and educational programming presented to visitors. Visitors engage in hands-on experiences that inspire a curiosity for learning. In 1987, a group of inspired citizens presented the idea of a children’s museum to Lexington Mayor Scotty Baesler and future Mayor Pam Miller. With the assistance of Lord Cultural Resources, a consulting firm in Toronto, the city began serious planning for the Lexington Children’s Museum. The site selection committee considered several sites and chose the current location in Victorian Square. Since first opening its doors in 1990 the Museum has hosted over three million visitors.
