The Des Moines Civic Center is a testament to the power of a dream and determination. In the 1970s following the closing of Des Moines’ KRNT Theater, a local bond option to build and fund a performing arts hall was proposed and narrowly defeated. Undeterred, a group of area business leaders joined forces and raised over $9 million in less than 90 days for the cause.
The rest is history and in June of 1979 the Des Moines Civic Center hosted its first performance. Along with the black box Stoner Theater and Nollen Plaza (now Cowles Commons) the Des Moines Civic Center became a downtown destination.

Marked as one of the "most endangered" historic buildings by the National Historical Registry, The Temple For Performing Arts was given new life with renovations completed in October of 2002.
Downtown Preservation Partners, the developer of The Temple for Performing Arts, assembled a restoration team composed of builders, architects and subcontractors experienced in historic rehabilitation.
In its pre-renovation state, the building had been stripped of its original cornice and awnings, and nearly all of the exterior windows had fallen into a state of disrepair. While the real jewel of The Temple has always been the interior architecture, the renovation architects worked diligently to restore the outside of the building to its original state as well.

The Iowa State Capitol, commonly called the Iowa Statehouse, is in Iowa's capital city, Des Moines. As the seat of the Iowa General Assembly, the building houses the Iowa Senate, Iowa House of Representatives, the Office of the Governor, and the Offices of the Attorney General, Auditor, Treasurer, and Secretary of State. The building also includes a chamber for the Iowa Supreme Court, although court activities usually take place in the neighboring Iowa Supreme Court building. The building was constructed between 1871 and 1886, and is the only five-domed capitol in the country.
Located at East 9th Street and Grand Avenue, the Capitol is set atop a hill and offers a panoramic view of the city's downtown and the West Capitol Terrace. Various monuments and memorials are to its sides and front, including the Soldiers and Sailors' Monument and the Lincoln and Tad statue.
