Eck Visitors Center
The Visitors’ Center, adjacent to the Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore, stands close to the Notre Dame Avenue entrance to campus. Both buildings opened in 1998 to serve as a first stop for visitors. The Eck Center houses a 150-seat auditorium and presents an introductory video about Notre Dame. It is also the headquarters for the Notre Dame Alumni Association. A wealth of other information is also offered, and the center is the launching point for regularly scheduled free campus tours. Guided public tours are available at various times throughout the year. Groups of 10 or more must arrange for a private tour. Tours are limited to the first 25 people who register within 30 minutes of the tour in person at the Eck Visitors Center. Advance reservations and telephone reservations are not accepted. Tours will include visits to the Grotto, Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Main Building (the Golden Dome), and the Hesburgh Library (“Touchdown Jesus”). Tours of Notre Dame Stadium are scheduled separately.

Cedar Grove Cemetery
Cedar Grove Cemetery
True to his pioneering and visionary spirit, Fr. Edward Sorin, C.S.C., established Cedar Grove Cemetery in 1843, a year after he founded the University of Notre Dame. At that time, Cedar Grove was on the far outskirts of campus and run by the same Holy Cross priests and brothers charged with keeping a fledgling university afloat. The Holy Cross brothers established a mortuary in these early years, ran operations from the basement level of what is now a women's residence hall, and used a horse-drawn hearse to transport coffins from Sacred Heart Church in the center of campus out to the cemetery. The mortuary operation, one of the first in the state of Indiana, was sold in 1911 to a local owner still in business today.

Mr. Warren’s generosity has continued throughout the years since the course opened. He has funded a number of improvements that have helped the golf course garner recognition as one of the top collegiate courses in the country. Hesburgh Library
Hesburgh Library
More than 50 years ago, President Emeritus Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., dreamed of a new library building that would become the academic heart of the University. It would serve—along with the Main Building and the Basilica of the Sacred Heart—as one of a trilogy of iconic buildings that would define the Notre Dame campus. The Memorial Library (renamed Hesburgh Library in 1987) and the Word of Life mural would soon stand for all to see, as a symbol of excellence and the pursuit of truth. The Word of Life mural is located on the south facade of Hesburgh Library, and can be seen from Notre Dame Stadium. Becaues of that, it has now been lovingly given the nickname, "Touchdown Jesus".

The Lakes at Notre Dame
The Lakes at Notre Dame
The same spring-fed lakes that captivated Father Edward Sorin in 1842 still gracefully buffer the northwest edge of the Notre Dame campus. St. Mary's Lake to the west and St. Joseph's Lake to the east serve as a park and nature preserve, but in the early days they provided food, ice, marl for brick and water for steam. Each lake has a picturesque walking/jogging trail around it and plays host to various student water activities including frigid mid-winter plunges for charity and the Fisher Regatta, an annual student boat race in which participants design and build their own (not especially seaworthy) vessels. Other features at the lakes include: 1. Our Lady of the Lake World Peace Plaza- a granite infinity fountain with a prayer for world peace inscribed in six different languages and a beautiful dock overlooking St. Mary's Lake. 2. St. Joseph Beach- Located to the east, the lake has a small beach and pier for swimming and a boating facility for student use. Currently closed for renovations.
Main Building (Golden Dome)
Main Building (Golden Dome)
The Main Building, with its famous Golden Dome, is a centerpiece of Notre Dame’s past and present. Today, it serves primarily as a headquarters for administration, although it still contains classrooms, harking back to a time when it was a crossroads where students learned, ate meals, and resided. This structure is actually the third building to stand on the site. It was built in 1879, the same year in which the previous building was destroyed by fire. The Golden Dome was added to this building in 1882 and was most recently regilded in 2005. The regilding process uses only about a fist-full of gold leaf to cover the entire structure. Atop the Dome, you will find a 19-foot-tall, 4,000-pound statue of Mary, the Mother of God, “Notre Dame” (“Our Lady”). With this beautiful adornment, the Main Building is 187 feet tall, making it the second tallest structure on campus after the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.
Basilica of the Sacred Heart
Basilica of the Sacred Heart
Consecrated on August 15, 1888, it was elevated to the rank of Minor Basilica on January 17, 1992. Neo-gothic in style the Basilica is home to the largest collection of 19th century French stained glass in the world as well as the oldest carillon in North America. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. As the University Church, the Basilica helps to serve the spiritual needs of the students, faculty, and staff of the University of Notre Dame, as well as members of the greater South Bend community. Mass is celebrated and confessions are heard at the Basilica each day and the Basilica regularly hosts weddings, funerals, and baptisms. It also hosts the Profession of Perpetual Vows and Presbyteral Ordinations for the Congregation of Holy Cross. The Basilica is open regularly for private prayer and touring.

Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes
Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes
The Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes is one-seventh the size of the famed French shrine where the Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Bernadette on 18 occasions in 1858. Visiting the site on one of his many trips to his native country, Notre Dame founder Father Edward Sorin vowed to reproduce it on the campus of his new university. A gift from Rev. Thomas Carroll, a former theology student, made it possible in 1896. Boulders from surrounding farms, most weighing two tons or more, were used in its construction. A small piece of stone from the original grotto in France is located on the right-hand side of the shrine directly below the statue of Mary. To Notre Dame students and alumni, the Grotto is a special place to spend a few quiet moments, and especially during football weekends and finals, you might have difficulty finding a candle to light. Hundreds of students have proposed marriage here; outdoor Masses are celebrated regularly; and the Rosary is prayed every day at 6:45 p.m., every day of the year, rain or shine.
