HISTORICAL DATA Rich in history and charm, the present day Gwinnett Historic Courthouse was built in 1885 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Sitting majestically on the square in historic downtown Lawrenceville, its unique architectural features include an original turret (balcony) and four story clock tower housing a Seth Thomas clock and bronze bell. The belfry you see at the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse was built in 1908. It was built at a cost of $4000 and replaced the original tower built after the courthouse burned in 1871. Original judges bench, chandelier lighting, once operable faux fireplaces, crown molding, transom doors with original hardware, hardwood floors and baseboards complete the interior features. On the Grounds In February 1837, the remains of eight soldiers were laid to rest on the courthouse square. These soldiers died fighting Creek Indians at the Battle of Shepherd’s Plantation in Stewart County on June 9th 1836. Gwinnett County is one of only two courthouse squares in the United States to have a burial ground on its premises. The other is in Norfolk, Virginia and contains the final resting place of General Douglas MacArthur.
