The 50-acre Bushnell Park is the oldest publicly funded park in the U.S. The park offers views of the Connecticut Capitol’s gold-leaf dome, rides on a vintage 1914 carousel, and tree-lined walking paths. Food trucks and some of the city’s most popular restaurants (Vito’s, Salute, Black Eyed Sally’s) line its periphery. In 1854 Horace Bushnell envisioned the Park as an urban green space where all the city’s residents could meet on common ground. Bushnell Park, the oldest public park in the United States and one of Hartford’s finest treasures, is comprised of 37 green acres, and is adorned with artwork, sculptures, and play areas. The Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is recognized for its historic artwork as well as its arboretum of over 700 trees, many considered champion trees.
For over eight decades, The Bushnell has brought Connecticut audiences face-to-face with the world's finest musicians, orchestras, dance companies, plays and other special attractions. Virtually every major artist of the 20th century has appeared on The Bushnell stage. Toscanini, Bernstein, Pavarotti, Hepburn, Brando, and Garland, along with the exciting stars of the new century such as Baryshnikov, Seinfeld and Menzel, are just a few of the legendary figures who have played the Bushnell's boards. The Shepherd M. Holcombe Archives, established in 2001, ensure that The Bushnell's glorious tradition will be documented and preserved for generations to come. A vast compilation of historic photographs, books, brochures and primary source materials--along with the Hall's famous backstage autograph walls…collectively capture the sweep and brilliance of Bushnell presentations provided to Connecticut audiences over nearly a century.

Welcome to the home of 360-degree democracy. What does that mean? Simple: the past shapes the future. Government represents the governed. Leaders – of every kind – were once just regular people like you and me. Here at Connecticut's Old State House – the very spot where Connecticut's democracy was born – you'll learn about how it was born and who made it happen. You'll meet people who went from ordinary to history-making by standing up for what they believed: and maybe think about where you fit in to "government by the people" yourself. And when you're ready for a break, we have a two-headed calf, Mark Twain's bicycle, and dozens of other pieces of Connecticut's amazing and eccentric history for you to enjoy. That's not just 360-degree democracy. That's 360 degrees of fun!

Mrs. Elizabeth Colt gave 106 Acres of land to the City in 1900 and the donation was accepted by the Common Council on November 13, 1905.The donated lands, extending to the Connecticut River, are shown on the map following this page.A plan was developed for the park by Theodore Wirth, Parks Superintendent. This plan retained the portion of the Colt estate grounds (which was originally designated by noted landscape gardener, Ignatz Pilat) facing Wethersfield Avenue and included an ornamental pond with picturesque plantings, grand shade trees and a curving drive. The balance of the land was framed with an edge of trees, leaving the center open for field play. The plan includes an area adjacent to the river labeled “River Grove, Boathouse and Landing.” 1.5 Acres in 1919 from E. Valentin, H. Porter, and A. Lippincott. In July 1920 lands on both sides of Stonington St. were acquired through an exchange by S. P. Colt. The granite and bronze memorial to Colonel Samuel Colt is inscribed “On the grounds which his taste beautified by the home that he loved this memorial stands to speak of his genius, his enterprise and his success and of his great and loyal heart. His wife in faithful affection dedicates this memorial, 1905.” Elm trees lining the park drives were planted in 1920 to commemorate one hundred and eighty-nine men who lost their lives during World War I. In 1926 memorial tablets were provided by the American Legion.

The New Britain Museum of American Art’s founding in 1903 entitles the institution to be designated the first museum of strictly American art in the country. That year, a $20,000 gift of gold bonds to the museum’s former parent, the New Britain Institute, from industrialist John Butler Talcott, created funds to purchase ”modern oil paintings.” Subsequent purchases, with advice from New York museums and galleries, further defined ”modern” to mean American works of art, now numbering more than 10,236. With particular strengths in colonial portraiture, the Hudson River School, American Impressionism, and the Ash Can School, not to mention the important mural series The Arts of Life in America by Thomas Hart Benton, the museum relies heavily on its permanent collection for exhibitions and programming, yet also displays a significant number of borrowed shows and work by emerging artists. The singular focus on American art and its panoramic view of American artistic achievement make the New Britain Museum of American Art a significant teaching resource available to the local, regional, and national public.

Kidcity is a children's museum with three floors of imagination play, where kids ages 1 to 7 play pretend with their favorite grown-ups. Our exhibits are handmade and one-of-a-kind, built by local artists who love inspiring playfulness in visitors of all ages. Kidcity is a homegrown non-profit organization that started in 1994 with Jen Alexander’s plan to open a children’s museum in Middletown. Over the next four years, under the guidance of a local board of directors and with help from hundreds of volunteers and contributors, the museum took shape. The historic Camp-Sterns House (c. 1835), was donated by St. Sebastian's Church, after the building retired from a 70-year career as their convent. The City of Middletown donated a portion of a public parking lot as a new site for the house. On March 15-17, 1997, the old house moved 400 feet down Washington Street, spending two days stuck in the middle of the road when it got a flat tire (true story!) After renovations to the house, our first hands-on exhibits were built by local artist Ted Esselstyn and friends, and Kidcity opened its doors to the public on September 26, 1998.

Covert Cocktail Club
multi-city
Once upon a time in 2016, Matt Levy, founder of Covert Cocktail Club, hosted a secret speakeasy as an intimate place for strangers to gather in his home. The only way to find out about it was via word of mouth. No address was given, the only clue being a sign placed in the window, “Cocktails Here”.
A lot of people thought it was pretty cool, even before The New York Times wrote about it. But that was all pre-pandemic, and this is a new era.
Liberated from the confines of a single location, Covert Cocktail Club now brings the speakeasy right to your door—be it at your home, office, bar mitzvah, dinner party, bachelor/ette party or anywhere you choose!
