Com um cenário de montanhas íngremes, a baía de Dhayah sempre foi uma área muito fértil e foi colonizada pelo menos desde o terceiro milênio a.C. Uma colina de formato cônico à beira dos jardins de palmeiras e no sopé das montanhas serviu como um posto de defesa natural para o oásis. As pessoas usam esta colina desde os tempos pré-históricos para povoamento e fortificação. Hoje é coroado por uma fortaleza, construída durante o século XIX sobre as fundações de estruturas muito mais antigas. É o único forte no topo de uma colina ainda existente nos Emirados Árabes Unidos e oferece uma vista fantástica dos exuberantes jardins de palmeiras, do mar e das montanhas dramáticas.

Ponto de referência histórica
Cerca de 12 quilômetros ao norte da cidade de Ras Al-Khaimah, perto das montanhas Hajar, a pequena vila de Shimal é o local de várias centenas de tumbas pré-islâmicas e um assentamento que foi datado de 2000 a 1300 aC. A área é um dos sítios arqueológicos mais importantes dos Emirados Árabes Unidos, embora os visitantes provavelmente precisem ser ávidos amantes da história para apreciar o local. Cerâmica, vasos de pedra, armas feitas de bronze e cobre e miçangas foram todos descobertos em escavações arqueológicas. Uma das descobertas mais importantes aqui foi uma grande tumba circular do período Umm al-Nar. O pequeno Forte Husn al-Shimal da era islâmica está situado em um afloramento rochoso acima e oferece uma boa vista de toda a área.

O Museu Nacional Ras Al-Khaimah fica em um forte que foi a residência da família governante até o início dos anos 1960. O museu abriga uma excelente coleção de artefatos arqueológicos e etnológicos. A Sala Qawasim no primeiro andar é particularmente interessante, com uma coleção de documentos, manuscritos e tratados entre os governantes de Ras Al-Khaimah e da Grã-Bretanha. Também há exposições de armas tradicionais pertencentes à família governante, bem como exposições arqueológicas sobre os primeiros colonos na área até o final do período islâmico.
