Santa Marta fue fundada por Rodrigo de Bastidas en 1525. Y su centro histórico esconde muchas joyas arquitectónicas y lugares interesantes para visitar: Casa de la Aduana, Parque Bolivar, Parque de los Novios, Claustro San Juan Nepomuceno, Convento San Juan de Dios, Morro Santa Marta o el Fuerte San Fernando. Catedral de Santa Marta, es un capítulo fundamental de la historia de Colombia y de Santa Marta. Está llena de recuerdos y de leyendas. En algún lugar de su edificación estuvo escondida la pequeña urna que contiene el corazón y las entrañas del Libertador, que posteriormente fueron llevados a Venezuela. Allí también se encuentran los restos del fundador de Santa Marta, Rodrigo de Bastidas, los cuales fueron traídos desde República Dominicana en 1953. Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino, última morada del libertador. Hoy es una casa museo y una de las visitas imprescindibles de la ciudad. Está situada a las afueras de la ciudad. Actualmente todas las plazas, parques y calles del centro histórico de Santa Marta han sido rehabilitadas y renovadas, y junto la nueva Marina de Santa Marta están haciendo del centro histórico un bello lugar para pasear y alojarse. A solo 10 minutos en lancha desde Neguanje está Playa Cristal o Playa del Muerto, con aguas cristalinas, arenas blancas y hermosos arrecifes coralinos ideales para la práctica del careteo o snorkeling. Es una de las mas visitadas y conocidas del turismo en Santa Marta y específicamente del Parque Tayrona por esta razón su visita es ofrecida en muchos planes vacacionales. Próxima a la bahía se encuentran cabañas donde es posible disfrutar de deliciosos platos propios de la región.

Santa Marta ofrece al visitante muchas opciones de ocio y entretenimiento cuando el sol se pone. Los ritmos tradicionales caribeños como el vallenato, la salsa o la cumbia junto a los nuevos como el reggaetón o el pop tropical se pueden escuchar en los diferentes bares y discos del centro histórico, el Rodadero y Taganga donde el turista encontrará desde ambientes románticos y bohemios hasta alegres y modernas discos de música crossover. Igualmente recomendable es un pasear en coche de caballos por el Rodadero o una simple caminata por el nuevo camellón de Taganga o el de Rodrigo de Bastidas en Santa Marta es una agradable experiencia. Anteriormente la rumba nocturna era patrimonio exclusivo del Rodadero, pero con el paso del tiempo los bares musicales y discotecas se ha traslado hacia el Centro Histórico de la ciudad gracias a la renovación de sus calles y plazas, y recientemente también a las discos de la bahía de Taganga. En el Rodadero podrá encontrar en su camellón grupos vallenatos y turistas paseando o sentados disfrutando de las noches estrelladas; más tarde buscarán una buena rumba en cualquiera de los bares o discotecas de la zona, como la más tradicional de todas: La Escollera u otras más recientes como Deja vu o Burukuka. El Centro Histórico concentra la mayor cantidad de bares y discos, desde el parque de los Novios hasta la calle 16. Algunos recomendables son: Crabs, La Puerta, Bauhaus, Matimba o Lautrec. Taganga, la renovación de su camellón y su constante afluencia de mochileros hace que sea un lugar divertido y cosmopolita para salir de rumba. Mucha gente joven, disfrutando a lo grande.
