De National Gallery of Art werd bedacht en geschonken aan de bevolking van de Verenigde Staten door Andrew W. Mellon (1855—1937). Mellon was een financier en kunstverzamelaar uit Pittsburgh die in 1921 naar Washington kwam om als minister van Financiën te dienen. In 1936 schreef Mellon aan president Franklin D. Yes, We are committed to eliminating single use plastics from the guest experience. All of our hotels have taken significant steps to remove plastics, including water bottles, miniature bathroom toiletries, and plastic F&B items.
