De pomp is allang verdwenen. Maar de naam blijft bestaan. Volgens de legende begroetten negentiende-eeuwse postkoetschauffeurs elkaar net voorbij de splitsing waar Broad Street nu Three Chopt Road kruist. Daar stond een taverne, en de uitgestrekte frameconstructie werd een baken langs de bereisde weg.
Op een gegeven moment viel de Short Pump well op op het erf van de taverne, maar toen er een nieuwe schaduwveranda overheen werd gebouwd, werd er een fout gemaakt. De lange hendel van de pomp moest worden afgesneden om onder het nieuwe dak te kunnen werken, en toen werd het een pomp met een korte handgreep. In de tijd dat de taverne een postkoetstop was tussen Richmond en Charlottesville, zeiden chauffeurs vaak: „Tot ziens bij de Short Pump.”
Tegenwoordig heeft „Short Pump” veel vers water aan het draaien van een kraan, maar de schilderachtige naam leeft voort! De fontein op Short Pump Plaza heeft één grote „korte pomp” in het midden met acht pompen eromheen op de buitenmuur ter herdenking van de naamgenoot.
