De haven van Civitavecchia werd door de keizer Traiano als poort van Rome gevonden en was eeuwenlang het belangrijkste punt voor uitwisseling en contacten tussen mensen van het oude „Mare Nostrum”. De haven van Civitavecchia, dankzij het nieuwe plan van de haven krijgt het commerciële verkeer de 2 miljoen ton goederen. Het is ook een strategische toegangspoort tot de belangrijkste toeristische Italiaanse zone en tot de geweldige rondreis langs mediterrane cruisemaatschappijen. De toename van het aantal passagiers zal mogelijk zijn door middel van een vooruitziend beleid, waarbij in 1991 de instelling van de coördinatie van het Tyrreense Middengebied wordt ingesteld, waarbij de handel (korte vaart) tussen Civitavecchia en de haven van Sardinië (Olbia-Golfo Aranci, Cagliari en Porto Torres) duurder wordt. Civitavecchia is ook de belangrijkste attractie van het cruiseverkeer. Het werk voor de stroomvoorziening van de dokken en de vergaderstructuren bood de mogelijkheid om een enorme toename van cruiseschepen te registreren, van 50 schepen uit 1996 tot 500 schepen in 2003. Civitavecchia probeert de belangrijkste cruisehaven van de Middellandse Zee te worden.
