Miljoenen mensen van over de hele wereld bezoeken elk jaar een van de beroemdste tempels in Japan, die zich dicht bij de luchthaven van Narita bevindt. De geschiedenis van de Naritasan Shinshoji-tempel begint met het beeld van Fudomyoo, dat als belangrijkste godheid in de tempel is verankerd en naar verluidt is uitgehouwen en ingewijd door Kobodaishi (Kukai, de stichter van de Shingon-boeddhistische sekte, 774-835) op verzoek van keizer Saga. De afbeelding was oorspronkelijk verankerd in de Takaosan Jingoji-tempel in Kyoto, de hoofdstad van die tijd. Toen Tairanomasakado in 939 een opstand tegen keizer Suzaku leidde, kreeg priester Kanjo een geheime opdracht van keizer Suzaku om de opstand te onderdrukken. Hij ging naar het district met de beeltenis van Fudomyoo en voerde een drie weken durende Goma-ritus voor vrede uit. Wonder boven wonder werd op de laatste dag van de Goma-ritus, op 14 februari 940, de opstand volledig onderdrukt. Priester Kanjo, die daarmee zijn plicht vervulde, bereidde zich voor om met het beeld van Fudomyoo terug te keren naar Kyoto, maar hij ontdekte dat het op mysterieuze wijze zo zwaar was geworden als een enorme steen en niet kon worden verplaatst. Al snel hoorde hij het orakel van Fudomyoo zeggen: „Mijn wens is niet vervuld. Ik wil hier voor altijd blijven en talloze mensen van hun lijden verlossen.” Keizer Suzaku was diep onder de indruk van de genade van Fudomyoo en gaf opdracht een tempel op te richten om het beeld op die plek te verankeren. Vervolgens werd de Naritasan Shinshoji-tempel opgericht door priester Kanjo.

Bij de ontwikkeling van de galerijen heeft Rekihaku getracht concrete, visuele tentoonstellingen te maken die een beter begrip van de Japanse geschiedenis en cultuur vergemakkelijken, waarbij gebruik is gemaakt van zowel de talrijke authentieke artefacten in de collectie als nauwkeurige reproducties en schaalmodellen. Als lid van een interuniversitair onderzoeksconsortium fungeert Rekihaku ook als centrum voor onderzoek en afstudeeronderzoek, neemt deel aan uitwisselingen met wetenschappers in het hele land en geeft opleidingen aan studenten die zijn ingeschreven voor het afstudeerprogramma. Drie wetenschappelijke disciplines vormen de basis voor Rekihaku's benadering van de Japanse geschiedenis. De ene is geschiedenis, in strikte zin, die zich voornamelijk baseert op geschreven documenten en ander documentair materiaal; de tweede, archeologie, bestudeert de materiële overblijfselen van menselijke activiteiten in het verleden zoals ze uit opgravingen zijn voortgekomen; de derde is folklore, waarin de volksgebruiken en overleveringen worden onderzocht die vandaag de dag nog steeds deel uitmaken van het leven van mensen. Samen met verwante wetenschappelijke technieken vormen deze drie disciplines van geschiedenis, archeologie en volksstudies de basis van het multidisciplinaire en integratieve begrip van de Japanse geschiedenis dat het gemeenschappelijke doel is van de Rekihaku-staf van wetenschappers. Het is een begrip van de Japanse geschiedenis dat Rekihaku via tentoonstellingen, publicaties en andere communicatiekanalen met het grote publiek en wetenschappers elders wil delen.
