„Deze kathedraal boven het Rijndal met al zijn macht en glorie zou in mijn geheugen zijn gebleven, zelfs als ik hem nooit meer had gezien”, schreef de Duitse auteur Anna Seghers. De majestueuze kathedraal van Mainz is zelfs vandaag de dag een belangrijk kenmerk van het stadsbeeld - meer dan duizend jaar na de bouw ervan. Mainz, gelegen op het kruispunt van belangrijke handelsroutes en de plaats waar Saint Boniface werkte en woonde, werd vanaf 746/47 een belangrijk centrum van het christendom. De stad werd uiteindelijk in 780 gepromoveerd tot het Metropolitan Aartsbisdom Mainz. In de tijd van aartsbisschop Willigis (975-1011) droeg het de titel „Heilige Stoel van Mainz”.

Het oude centrum van Mainz met zijn middeleeuwse kathedraal, het Kiespaleis, patriciërsherenhuizen, smalle straatjes, geplaveide straatjes en prachtige pleinen weerspiegelt de fascinerende geschiedenis van de stad. Moderne monumentale gebouwen zijn het stadhuis van de Deense architect Are Jacobsen, gebouwd in 1971, het winkelcentrum „Am Brand”, het conferentiecentrum Rheingoldhalle en Fort Malakoff. Wandelen door Mainz betekent wandelen door 2000 jaar geschiedenis en cultureel leven, Gouden Eeuwen en tijden van onrust en totale vernietiging. Het stadscentrum dat zich uitstrekt van Kaisertor in het noorden langs de Kaiserstrasse, en van het centraal station naar de citadelin het zuiden is het oudste deel van de stad, daterend uit de Romeinse tijd. De nederzetting stond bekend als Mogontiacum of Aurea Moguntia, en veel gebouwen en kenmerken herinneren ons aan de tijd dat de stad de hoofdstad was van de Romeinse keizerlijke provincie Germania Superior.
