Marseille herbergt nu een museum naar zijn evenbeeld, leunend tegen de noordkust van de Middellandse Zee, tegenover de zee, open voor de stroom van verandering. Het MuCEM is veel meer dan een museum, het is een cultureel centrum dat alle disciplines van de sociale wetenschappen samenbrengt en artistieke expressie vanaf de twee kusten van de Middellandse Zee presenteert. Wat nog belangrijker is, het is een nieuwe manier om het Middellandse Zeegebied te zien als een plaats van openheid en uitwisseling, om na te denken over een gemeenschappelijke geschiedenis, om de dialoog tussen beschavingen te begrijpen, de uitdagingen uit te leggen, deze toe te passen op hedendaagse fenomenen en vorm te geven aan een nieuwe openbare ruimte.
