Het werelderfgoed Zollverein — vroeger bekend als de „mooiste kolenmijn ter wereld” — en nu het bekendste industriële monument en centrum van de creatieve economie in het Ruhrgebied. De Villa Hügel ligt in de buitenwijk Bredeney in Essen. Het is de voormalige residentie van de industriële magnaat Alfred Krupp en zijn familie. Het gebouw werd voltooid in 1873 en werd gedurende de volgende zeventig jaar door drie generaties van de familie gebruikt als woning en voor representatieve doeleinden. Sinds 1955/6 worden hier regelmatig grootschalige internationale kunsttentoonstellingen gehouden.
