Het gebouw werd in 1256 na Christus gebouwd voor Sultan Hassan bin Mohammad bin Qala'oun als moskee en religieuze school voor alle sekten. Het werd zo ontworpen dat elk van de vier belangrijkste soennitische sekten (orthodoxe islamitische of soennitische riten, bestaande uit Shafieten, Malikieten, Haneften en Hanbalieten) een eigen school heeft en tegelijkertijd de moskee deelt.

Het Museum of Islamic Art werd geopend in de Gallery of Arab Antiquities in 1881 tijdens het bewind van Khedive Tafiq. De oostkant kijkt uit over de Nijl en is voorzien van de Franse kunststijl Arnoveau, die tot uiting komt in het metaal- en glaswerk bij de ingang van het paleis. De westkant van het gebouw draagt de kenmerken van de neoclassicistische stijl, een mix van verschillende ornamenten.
