De Rock of Dunamase is een indrukwekkend en schitterend voorbeeld van een Keltisch fort met uitzicht op de vallei van de O'Moores, net buiten Portlaoise, County Laois. Spectaculaire uitzichten op het omliggende platteland maken de torenhoge Rock of Dunamase tot een plaats van strategisch belang. Dunamase, de plaats van een vroegchristelijke nederzetting die in 842 door de Vikingen werd geplunderd, werd een van de belangrijkste Anglo-Normandische bolwerken in Laois. Het maakte deel uit van de bruidsschat van Aoife, de dochter van Diarmuid Mac Murrough, koning van Leinster, toen ze in 1170 werd uitgehuwelijkt aan de Normandische veroveraar Strongbow. Toen Isabel, de dochter van Strongbow en Aoife, trouwde met William Marshal, graaf van Pembroke, kreeg ze Dunamase cadeau als onderdeel van het huwelijkscadeau van haar huwelijk.

Emo Court is een typisch neoklassiek herenhuis, gelegen in het midden van de oude Slieve Bloom Mountains. De beroemde architect James Gandon, net van zijn werk aan het Custom House en de Four Courts in Dublin, ging in 1790 aan de slag met Emo Court. Het gebouw dat er nu staat werd echter pas zo'n 70 jaar later voltooid. Op het landgoed woonden de graven van Portarlington totdat de Onafhankelijkheidsoorlog hen dwong Ierland voorgoed te verlaten. De jezuïeten verhuisden enkele jaren later en als noviciaat van de Ierse provincie bood het landhuis onderdak aan zo'n 500 stagiaires van de orde. Een majoor Cholmeley-Harrison nam Emo Court in de jaren zestig over en restaureerde het volledig. Hij opende de prachtige tuinen en parken voor het publiek voordat hij uiteindelijk het hele landgoed in 1994 aan de Ierse bevolking presenteerde. U kunt nu genieten van een rondleiding door het huis voordat u gaat ontspannen in de charmante tearoom. De tuinen zijn een toonbeeld van neoklassiek landschapsontwerp, met formele gazons, een meer en boswandelingen die erop wachten om ontdekt te worden.

Het betoverende achttiende-eeuwse landschap van Heywood Gardens, in de buurt van Ballinakill, County Laois, bestaat uit tuinen, meren, bossen en een aantal spannende architectonische kenmerken. Het park ligt in een uitgestrekte heuvel. Het uitzicht naar het zuidoosten omvat zeven provincies. De architect Sir Edwin Lutyens ontwierp de formele tuinen, die het middelpunt van het pand vormen. Waarschijnlijk heeft de beroemde ontwerper Gertrude Jekyll ze ontworpen. De tuinen bestaan uit elementen die met elkaar verbonden zijn door een terras dat oorspronkelijk langs de voorkant van het huis liep. (Helaas is het huis er niet meer.) Een van de meest bijzondere kenmerken van de site is een verzonken tuin met een langwerpig zwembad, met in het midden een grote fontein. De Heywood-ervaring begint naast de Gate Lodge. Informatiepanelen en bewegwijzering leiden u rond in de magische tuinen van Lutyens en het omringende romantische landschap. Galerij
