Ontworpen ter gelegenheid van het feestjaar 2001, waarin de stad Porto werd uitgeroepen tot Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa, is Casa da Música het eerste gebouw in Portugal dat vanaf het begin uitsluitend is gewijd aan muziek, hetzij in openbare optredens, hetzij op het gebied van artistieke opleiding en creatie. Het project van Casa da Música werd in 1999 in gang gezet naar aanleiding van een internationale architectuuraanbesteding die werd gewonnen door het project dat werd gepresenteerd door Rem Koolhaas-Office for Metropolitan Architecture. De opgravingen begonnen in 1999 op het oude tramstation op de rotonde van Boavista (Rotunda da Boavista) en Casa da Musica werd geopend in het voorjaar van 2005, op 15 april.
