Zoals Natsume Soseki's eerste indruk van Kumamoto City: „Kumamoto is een bosstad”. Ondanks de twee oorlogen is de binnenstad platgebrand, de heuvel waar het Kumamoto-kasteel ligt en de delen van de Shirakawa-rivier zijn vervuld met het groen van de kamferbomen en kersenbomen. Het is onze verrassing dat er zoveel enorme bomen zijn die honderden jaren ouder zijn dan het kasteel zelf.
Ook Kumamoto heeft rijk stromend water. Ezu Lake en Suizenji Jojuen zitten altijd vol kristalhelder water. Verder onder de grond van Kumamoto City stroomt er genoeg stromend water voor de hele 650.000 inwoners.
