Ponce de Leon named this area “Cape of Florida” when he led the first Spanish
expedition to Florida in 1513.
The Cape Florida lighthouse, the park’s best known feature, was completed in 1825 but
was damaged during the Second Seminole War. The repaired tower, completed in 1846,
remains the oldest standing structure in Miami-Dade County. Tours of the 95-foot lighthouse and the keeper’s house museum are available.
The island served as a secret meeting place and port for runaway slaves and Black Seminoles waiting to rendezvous with sea captains or board dugouts for a passage to safety in the British Bahamas. Although the lighthouse was built to save lives and ships, its unflinching light rought an end to this avenue of escape. In September 2004, Cape Florida was designated a National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Site.
In 1992, Hurricane Andrew uprooted a forest of non-native Australian-pine trees that dominated the landscape and left the park nearly treeless. The storm provided land managers the opportunity to restore the park’s native plant communities. Today, a variety of natural habitats, from mangrove forest to maritime hammock, can be seen at Cape Florida.
Depending upon the season, more than 50 butterfly species and 170 bird species may be seen at the park. The peregrine falcon, piping plover and American crocodile regularly take
refuge here. Loggerhead sea turtles' nest along the beach each summer. Green sea turtles and Florida manatees often graze in the seagrass beds offshore.
Cape Florida Lighthouse, Crandon Park, Key Biscayne
Historical landmark
1 mi
As the oldest structure in Miami-Dade, the lighthouse is a time capsule containing an immense amount of Florida history. First erected in 1825, the Cape Florida Light has survived nearly 200 years of erosion, dozens of hurricanes, an attack by native Seminole Native Americans, and an explosion of lantern oil and gun powder. Yet, through all the tribulation, she still stands. When the lighthouse was originally built, she guided sailors around the Florida reef helping them avoid an unfortunate accident. Today, we’ve renovated her into a cultural landmark and added her to the National Register of Historic Places.
Crandon Golf at Key Biscayne is a championship 18-hole golf course located on the island paradise of Key Biscayne, just 10 minutes from downtown Miami. It is the perfect alternative to civilization where you can spend a day enveloped by the tropics. Crandon Golf is an explosion of color and light surrounded by water, mangroves and lush, tropical foliage. Secluded and inviting, Crandon is the only public golf course on Biscayne Bay.
Crandon was the site of the Senior PGA Tour for 18 years, attracting golf’s greats including Lee Trevino, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Don Messengale, Ray Floyd and Gary Player. The course is considered one of the most beautiful and difficult par-72 courses in the state of Florida. Crandon’s seventh hole is touted as “One of the Greatest Holes in Golf,” a gorgeous par 4 that doglegs to the right and sends your golf ball soaring over sparkling water. The course has been rated in the top ten courses by Golfweek, and one of America’s top 75 upscale courses by Golf Digest.
From the first hole – a dog leg par 5 that requires a drive over water and mangroves – to the last – another par 5 with water on both sides of the fairway – Crandon Golf at Key Biscayne is, in many ways, Miami’s signature golf course.
Named after one of the most captivating shorelines on the Spanish coast, Vizcaya Museum & Gardens captures jaw-dropping European extravagance in an enchanting American context. The home’s builder, James Deering, was a prolific industrialist who explored uncharted territory in the creation of this ambitious home, building his Renaissance-inspired estate at the heart of Miami’s tropical hardwood hammock. Although inspired by the earlier architectural style, the home was very innovative in its incorporation of modern technology available at the time of its construction (1914), including everything from details on how the structure itself was built to the incorporation of modern touches such as a telephone switching system and a central vacuum system. Deering only wintered at Vizcaya from 1916 to 1925 and upon James’s departure, the estate was left to several nieces and nephews.
Deering’s adventurous spirit lives on to this day. The estate’s very emblem – “The Caravel” – commemorates a ship used during the “Age of Exploration.” As you begin your own exploration of this historic Miami icon, you’ll notice an image of the mythical voyager “Bel Vizcaya” at the entrance, marking the beginning of a most memorable journey ahead.

Spark Wonder at The Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science on four beautiful acres of bayfront land in Maurice A. Ferré Park.
Frost Science stands out as one of only a few institutions worldwide to have both an aquarium and a planetarium in one museum. The North and West wings provide six floors of interactive exhibitions dedicated to the ecosystem of the Everglades.
The museum is located next to Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), completing the vision of Maurice A. Ferré Park as a hub dedicated to science, art and culture in the heart of Downtown Miami. The PAMM made the move from a former location in Downtown Miami to its 200,000-square-foot landmark building designed by award-winning architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron.
Frost Science, conceived by Grimshaw Architects, cuts an equally impressive silhouette on Miami’s skyline with a free-standing, spherical planetarium, the 500,000-gallon, cone-shaped aquarium and an indoor-outdoor campus offering ample views of both Biscayne Bay and the sparkling city surrounding it.
Situated at the cultural crossroads of the Americas and in the heart of one of the world’s fastest-growing urban centers, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County is one of the largest performing arts centers anywhere. Strategically located in downtown Miami, the Arsht Center occupies 570,000 square feet along historic Biscayne Boulevard between N.E. 13th and 14th Streets.
Visit Miami’s flagship art museum, and learn about modern and contemporary, international art at Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM). Exhibitions highlight Miami’s diverse community and pivotal geographic location at the crossroads of the Americas. In addition to exploring the galleries, visitors can: enjoy waterfront dining at Verde restaurant; shop a unique selection of art books, furnishings and handmade items at the museum’s gift store; and take in the spectacular views of Biscayne Bay and the elaborate hanging gardens. Designed by Pritzker Prize winning architects Herzog & de Meuron, PAMM provides an educational and civic forum for the County’s residents and visitors alike.

Fairchild opened to the public in 1938.
Fairchild is a museum, laboratory, learning center, and conservation research facility whose main role is preserving biodiversity. It has 45,000 members and more than 1,200 volunteers. In 2012, Fairchild became the home of the American Orchid Society.
Lincoln Road is a world-renowned, outdoor pedestrian promenade in the heart of Miami Beach, featuring over 200 shops, cafés & galleries, public art, culture, happenings and more.
Extending from the Atlantic Ocean to the east and Biscayne Bay to the west, Lincoln Road serves as Miami Beach’s community epicenter featuring various shops, sidewalk cafés, galleries, restaurants, bars, and other businesses.
It attracts millions of visitors annually from all over the world not just for its shopping destinations, restaurants, and nightlife but also for its history, architecture, public art, and cultural attractions. When famed architect Morris Lapidus was commissioned to redesign Lincoln Road in the 1960s, his distinguished style positioned the road as one of the most luxurious destinations in the city during that time.
Today, Lincoln Road is an iconic pedestrian district that serves as a hub for modern culture seekers, both local and international. Anchored by three internationally respected cultural institutions, the New World Symphony, Oolite Arts and the Colony Theater, Lincoln Road serves as a charging station for the mind, body, and spirit.
