St. Martin's Cathedral
St. Martin's Cathedral
Repère historique
"This cathedral above the Rhine Valley with all of its might and glory would have remained in my memory even if I had never seen it again," wrote the German author Anna Seghers. The majestic Cathedral of Mainz is a key feature of the cityscape even today – over a thousand years after its construction. Mainz, located at the intersection of important trade routes and the place where Saint Boniface worked and lived, became an important centre of Christianity from 746/47. The city was eventually promoted to the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Mainz in 780. During the time of Archbishop Willigis (975-1011), it bore the title of "Holy See of Mainz".

Mainz is home to the Carnival, the so called “Meenzer Fassenacht” which has developed since the early 19th century. Carnival in Mainz has its roots in the criticism of social and political injustices under the shelter of cap and bells. If you want to explore the traditional carnival festivities in Germany, Mainz is the place to be. “Meenzer Fassenacht” takes place every year in early spring.

Historic City Centre
Historic City Centre
Repère historique
The old centre of Mainz with its medieval cathedral, the Electoral Palace, patrician town houses, narrow lanes, cobblestone streets and beautiful squares reflects the fascinating history of the city. Modern landmark buildings are the City Hall by the Danish architect Are Jacobsen built in 1971, the "Am Brand" shopping centre, the Rheingoldhalle conference centre and Fort Malakoff. Walking through Mainz means walking through 2000 years of history and cultural life, Golden Ages and times of upheaval and utter destruction. The city centre extending from Kaisertor in the north along Kaiserstrasse, and from the main railway station to the citadel in the south is the oldest part of the city, dating back to Roman times. The settlement was known as Mogontiacum or Aurea Moguntia, and many buildings and features remind us of the time when the city was the capital of the Roman imperial province of Germania Superior.

St. Stephen's
St. Stephen's
Repère historique
Two hundred thousand visitors per year show clearly that St. Stephen's is well worth a visit! Tourists from all over the world walk up the incline of Stephansberg to see the brilliant blue stained glass windows by Marc Chagall. The reconstruction and restoration of the Gothic church, which was almost completely destroyed in the Second World War, also led to its revival as a spiritual place. More than a thousand years ago in 990, Willigis, Archbishop and Archchancellor of the Holy Roman Empire endowed a collegiate foundation here and had the church built as the "Empire's Place of Prayer". The constructor of the cathedral was himself laid to rest in St. Stephen's in 1011. The new Gothic building was erected between 1290 and 1335. It stands on the foundations of a basilica built in the Ottonian pre-Romanesque style around 990. When the city's nearby gunpowder tower blew up in 1857, St. Stephen's was badly damaged. In the course of the restorations, the rich Baroque decorations were removed.

The Rhine Promenade of Mainz, also known as Adenauer Ufer, runs from the customs port to the old city centre. It is a popular meeting place for young and old. There are benches and lawns to enjoy the view and the sun, as well as various playgrounds for the little ones. Skateboarders and basketball players also find great facilities here. Along the promenade, you will come across the fully restored Raimunditor and Schlosstor facing the river. Right beside Theodor-Heuss-Brücke, the bridge linking the German states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse, we have the Rheinstrand, a city beach area perfect for a drink or meal with friends and also used as an events venue. Equally popular are the dedicated barbeque areas complete with metal barrels to dispose of the hot ash.

In addition to exhibits representing current fauna and flora, there are many fossils on display, some of them found in Rhineland-Palatinate. Among the local finds are primeval horses that lived around 44 million years ago and that were discovered at Eckfelder Maar. There is also a great collection of animals that lived in Europe during the Ice Age. The museum's quagga group is known all over the world. The Natural History Museum at Mainz is the only museum that has three specimens of this now extinct subspecies of plains zebras of which there are only 23 stuffed exhibits in the world. As an educational institution, the museum is committed to holding up the core values of our society. Our core tasks are to collect, preserve, study, and communicate our scientific heritage and to preserve it for future generations.

Covert Cocktail Club
Covert Cocktail Club

Once upon a time in 2016, Matt Levy, founder of Covert Cocktail Club, hosted a secret speakeasy as an intimate place for strangers to gather in his home. The only way to find out about it was via word of mouth. No address was given, the only clue being a sign placed in the window, “Cocktails Here”. A lot of people thought it was pretty cool, even before The New York Times wrote about it. But that was all pre-pandemic, and this is a new era. Liberated from the confines of a single location, Covert Cocktail Club now brings the speakeasy right to your door—be it at your home, office, bar mitzvah, dinner party, bachelor/ette party or anywhere you choose!

Crossed arms. Poked out bottom lips. Eye rolls. Sighs of displeasure. Mention team building, and you might get these reactions. The thought of another ropes course, forced togetherness or (gasp!) trust falls while keeping your already busy team from their work can create more stress than staying at the workplace. But not with On Purpose Adventures. Your group may need team building (focused on skill development/enhancement) or team bonding (focused on relationship-minded activities) or a combination of both. But whatever the activity, it needs to be facilitated WITH purpose and ON purpose. Most team building programs don’t tie the experience into real-world, job-related application. But ours does. On Purpose delivers team building and bonding with a purpose. Our programs are structured around the way your team operates, and can be tailored to fit your specific challenges and goals. Your team will engage in collaborative activities that build communication, cohesiveness, and enhance skills like collective problem solving, while having fun together. Team building and bonding with On Purpose Adventures brings your team members together in exciting, driven, purposeful activities that make a big impression and generate a genuine team response, keeping them productive and engaged. Skill enhancement happens in a real-life relatable structure, so your takeaways aren’t easily forgotten or lost as soon as the fun ends. Let us help you strengthen your team - on purpose.
