Before us is one of the green spaces that make up the natural artistic heritage of Madrid. It is one of the most beautiful and, paradoxically, one of the least known. The Duke and Duchess of Osuna--especially by the Duchess, María Josefa de la Soledad Alonso Pimentel, created it in 1784. As a protector of artists, bullfighters, and intellectuals, the Duchess created an authentic natural paradise frequently visited by the most distinguished personalities of the period, and where the most prestigious artists, gardeners, and set designers worked.

Alfonso XII Monument

Historical landmark
19 minutes away
This group of sculptures devoted to King Alfonso XII, which was opened in 1922 by his son, Alfonso XIII, is in one of the most popular areas of the large pond in the Retiro park. The equestrian figure, with a height of more than 20 metres, is the work of the sculptor, Mariano Benlliure, responsible for other well known effigies in the capital, such as that of Álvaro de Bazán in the Plaza de la Villa; the façade of the Metrópolis building on the Gran Vía; or the sculpture of Goya, alongside the Prado Museum.

Almudena Cathedral

Historical landmark
25 minutes away
Madrid´s cathedral, which stands in Hapsburg Madrid, has a short but tortuous history. The first plans for the church were drawn up in 1879 by Francisco de Cubas, who wanted to create a pantheon for the late Queen Maria de la Mercedes. The foundation stone was laid in 1883, but when Pope Leo XIII granted a bull in 1885 for the creation of the Madrid-Alcalá bishopric, the plans for the church were changed to become plans for a cathedral.
