The Erasmus Bridge (Dutch: Erasmusbrug) is a combined cable-stayed and bascule bridge in the center of Rotterdam, connecting the north and south parts of this city, second largest in the Netherlands. The bridge was named after Desiderius Erasmus a.k.a. Erasmus of Rotterdam, a prominent Christian renaissance humanist.

World Port Center is a 33-story, 123.1 m (404 ft) skyscraper in Rotterdam. Sir Norman Foster designed the 32-story building. This British architect gained international fame with his designs for the London Stansted Airport, the Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank in Hong Kong, the extension of the Reichstag building in Berlin and the 259 m (850 ft) Commerzbank Tower in Frankfurt. In 1992 he designed the master plan of the entire Wilhelminapier, where the World Port Centre is standing.

KPN Tower is a 96.5-metre tall office building in Rotterdam. It was designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano and construction began in 1998. The building was officially opened by its owner KPN on September 28, 2000. The concept and design of the motion graphic light installation are from Studio Dumbar.

The Wereldmuseum Rotterdam (formerly known as the Museum voor Land- en Volkenkunde) is an ethnographic museum, situated Willemskade in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The museum was founded in 1883 and shows more than 1800 ethnographic objects from various cultures in Asia, Oceania, Africa, the Americas and the Islamic heritage.

The Maritime Museum Rotterdam is a maritime museum in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Dedicated to naval history, it was founded in 1874 by Prince Henry of the Netherlands. Next to the Maritime Museum lies the open-air Maritime Museum Harbour, which merged with the Maritime Museum in 2014. The Maritime Museum Harbour contains an exceptional collection of historic vessels and cranes which are maintained in working condition.

The Netherlands Photo Museum is a museum in the Netherlands primarily focused on photography. The museum collection consists of many historical, social and cultural images from the 20th and 21st century, from the Netherlands and elsewhere. It has control over more than 150 archives (three million plus images) taken by Dutch photographers. The archives are stored in climate-controlled film storage facilities. It is located in Rotterdam at the Wilhelminakade[2] in the previous Holland America Line workshop building, also known as the Las Palmas building. The Netherlands Photo Museum was founded in 1989, under the name Nederlands Foto Archief. and was subsidised by the Dutch government. In 2003, it was reborn, through an endowment from Hein Wertheimer, a wealthy Dutch lawyer, and renamed to Nederlands Fotomuseum. Visitors to the NFM may browse the museum’s library of 120000 digital images, watch short films or participate in educational activities. The museum has large exhibition rooms and a rotating display of Dutch history.

Even though the Old Luxor Theatre is pretty and classical, there was a need for a new, modern and bigger theatre in Rotterdam. Therefore the New Luxor Theatre was opened in 2001 but the Old Luxor theatre was never closed. There are still many shows in the theatre and the Old Luxor was currently renovated.

Euromast is an observation tower in Rotterdam, Netherlands, designed by Hugh Maaskant constructed between 1958 and 1960. It was specially built for the 1960 Floriade and is a listed monument since 2010.

The Witte Huis or White House is a building and National Heritage Site in Rotterdam, Netherlands, built in 1898 in the Art Nouveau style. The building is 43 m (141 ft) tall, with 10 floors. It was also the first hoogbouw (literally: high-rise building) in Europe. The building is listed as a Rijksmonument.

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is an art museum in Rotterdam. It is located at the Museumpark in the district Rotterdam Centrum, close to the Kunsthal and the Natural History Museum. The museum opened in 1849. It houses the collections of Frans Jacob Otto Boijmans (1767–1847) and Daniël George van Beuningen (1877–1955). In the collection, ranging from medieval to contemporary art, are works of Rembrandt, Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, and Salvador Dalí. In 2013, the museum had 292,711 visitors and was the 14th most visited museum in the Netherlands.

The museum is situated in the Museumpark of Rotterdam next to the Natuurhistorisch Museum Rotterdam, and in the vicinity of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Entrance to the Kunsthal is from the Westzeedijk. The building was designed by the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas. The Kunsthal has no permanent collection but organises a wide range of temporary exhibits. The large space available 3,300 m2 (36,000 sq ft) allows various exhibits in parallel. The range of exhibitions presented at the Kunsthal ranges from 20th-century masters to current contemporary art movements. Recently the museum had exhibitions featuring artists such as Chuck Close, Andy Warhol and Arne Quinze.

Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk, In English St. Lawrence Church, is a Protestant church in Rotterdam. It is the only remnant of the medieval city of Rotterdam.

The Natuurhistorisch Museum Rotterdam is a natural history museum in Rotterdam. In 1922, the Rotterdam section of the Nederlandsche Natuurhistorische Vereeniging (Dutch Natural History Association) founded the Vereeniging tot Oprichting en Instandhouding van een Natuurhistorisch Museum (Association for Establishing and Maintaining a Natural History Museum). In 1927, the Natuurhistorisch Museum (Natural History Museum) opened.

The Chabot Museum is a museum dedicated to the Dutch painter and sculptor Hendrik Chabot in Rotterdam. The museum is housed in a monumental villa in the Museumpark, near the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen and the Netherlands Architecture Institute.

The Markthal (English: Market Hall) is a residential and office building with a market hall underneath, located in Rotterdam. The building was opened on October 1, 2014, by Queen Máxima of the Netherlands.[9] Besides the large market hall, the complex houses 228 apartments, 4600 m2 retail space, 1600 m2 Horeca and an underground 4-storey parking garage with a capacity of 1200+ cars

"The Park" is the most well-known park in Rotterdam, located west of the city centre. The park is located between "de Nieuwe Maas", "de Parkhaven", "de Westzeedijk" and "het Scheepvaartkwartier". Alongside the park is the "Parkkade". The park does not have an official name but better known as "the park" or the park near the Euromast.

Beurs-World Trade Center is located on the Coolsingel and Beursplein in the centre of Rotterdam. It is a major business centre in Rotterdam with approximately 200 offices. The building is 93 meters high. The center is a member of the international World Trade Centers Association.

De Doelen is a concert venue and convention centre in Rotterdam, Netherlands. It was originally built in 1934 but then destroyed in 1940 during the German bombardment of Rotterdam in May 1940 at the outset of World War II. It was rebuilt in 1966, originally with one hall to which two more were added in the 1990s. It has a variety of facilities, including the Grote Zaal (Grand Hall), a 2,200-seat concert hall, two smaller halls which each seat about 700 people, and convention rooms. In 2015 it was classified as a Rijksmonument. Although mainly known as a venue for classical music, de Doelen is also a stage for jazz, world music and as the Central Boxoffice for the International Film Festival Rotterdam. It is also the home of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Witte de Withkwartier is the vibrant heart of the Rotterdam art scene and is known for its dynamic nightlife. Sometimes referred to as Rotterdam’s ‘Axis of Art’, the Witte de Withstraat runs from Museumpark to the Maritime Museum and is lined in various cultural institutions. Browse the art on display at TENT or Witte de With, catch a show at the Witte de With Theatre, or immerse yourself in avant-garde film and music in WORM. While galleries, cultural institutes and fashion boutiques are open all day, the focus shifts to cafés and restaurants in the evening. Grand café NRC (which stands for Nieuw Rotterdams Café) is a great place to start your evening with a plate of spaghetti or fish&chips. Prefer a juicy hamburger? Join the patrons at Ter Marsch. The most famous pub in the street is De Witte Aap, an institution in the city’s nightlife for ages; Lonely Planet even nominated it as the best bar in the world! More recent arrivals to the bar scene, like Ballroom and La Bru, are popular with the young and trendy crowd. The gin and tonics sell like hotcakes across the meticulously hip designer counters. Hoping to rub shoulders with local artists and authors? Head over to De Schouw, a classic café that’s quickly packed on good nights.

A 390-metre-long wooden pedestrian bridge in the city centre links the Schieblock, a creative meeting place, with Station Hofplein, the former station building that is now home to a number of restaurants, shops and a jazz club.

Like you’re shopping in Paris. The van Oldenbarneveltstraat in the Mauritskwartier is one of the leading shopping streets of Rotterdam, with a host of exclusive fashion boutiques, luxurious shoe shops and charming cafés. The window displays of Nen Xavier, Wendela van Dijk and Mostert & Van Leeuwen showcase stylish high-heels, fashionable outfits, elegant coats and handbags made from the best leather. You’ll find lots of Danish, Swedish and French brands, but Rotterdam designers like Monique van Heist and Susan Bijl are also well represented. Everything in this street is the epitome of good taste – even the flowers from florist ‘s Zomers across the street are high-end.

This is the vibrant commercial heart of the city and is bustling with activity seven days a week. On the Lijnbaan (the first pedestrian shopping area in Europe) and in the Beurstraverse – or ‘Koopgoot’ (‘Shopping Gutter’) as the locals call it – you can find all the leading retail chain stores in one place. From international brands like H&M, Zara, Tommy Hilfiger, Mango and the Body Shop to the traditional Dutch HEMA and famous Dutch department store de Bijenkorf.

On either side of the Coolsingel, the best-known street of Rotterdam, you’ll find all kinds of shops. Mostly international brand stores like the Decathlon and Zara Home, but also de Bijenkorf, the luxury department store with shop-in-shops of large (fashion)brands. There are major changes planned for the Coolsingel in the coming years. In 2020, the street will have been transformed into an attractive, green boulevard that will better connect the Laurenskwartier and Lijnbaankwartier.

A stone’s throw away from the Central Station you’ll find the High-End Fashion District where international fashion brands and luxury stores are situated. Well-known designers such as Hugo Boss, Antony Morato, Tommy Hilfiger and Michael Kors have opened their stores here.

The Oude Binnenweg is a charming historic street while the Karel Doormanstraat is from more recent times. But both shopping streets lie in the shadows of the Lijnbaan – and the big chain stores – and it shows. The shops here are smaller and more focused on specific lifestyles. Many modern men and women know where to find Sissy Boy for basic clothing and interior items of good quality. The youth buy the latest model of Vans from the Vans Store and design enthusiasts add to their dinnerware collection at the Finnish Iittala. And there are many more interesting shops like these to be found.

One of the most acclaimed (shopping) streets of Rotterdam is the Nieuwe Binnenweg. A long string of small fashion and design shops, artisan bakeries, old-fashioned barbers, tasty delicatessens and fancy coffee bars leads you from the centre deep into Rotterdam West, a neighbourhood known for its pleasing balance between down-to-earth, multicultural and super hip. And that is reflected in the selection of shops, which doesn’t get more varied than here. From the shop of fashion designer Joline Jolink to the men’s shoe store Corbeau, from the mini garden centre Stek to concept store PLEK: as a shopaholic, you won’t believe your luck.

In recent years, the Meent, located in the Laurenskwartier, has developed into the most glamorous street of Rotterdam. With fashion and shoe stores in the higher segment, such as Scotch & Soda, SuperTrash and American Vintage. Those tired of shopping can relax in one of the many restaurants and lunchrooms that colour the street scene of the Meent.

Somewhat hidden in the busy shopping centre of Rotterdam is the Korte Hoogstraat. Here you won’t find any chain stores – with the exception of Dille & Kamille – but fun, surprising shops with unique products. From comics at Yendor, toys at the Zonnewijzer to street fashion at Funkie House and Daily Rush. So be sure to visit this street in the Laurenskwartier sometime, before you head to Beursplein or the Hoogstraat!

If you are an adventurous shopper who likes to shop off the beaten track, then you’re in the right place here. Many creative Rotterdammers have opened a store, gallery or coffee shop (or a combination of the three) in this area. Often small in size but big in uniqueness. Sometimes the search takes a while, but that makes the find even more special, right?

The stylish Luxor theatre is the oldest theatre in the Netherlands and was designed by P. Vermaas. The Luxor Theatre Rotterdam opened in 1917 and was mainly used as a movie theatre during those early years. The Luxor Theatre is one of the few buildings in Rotterdam city centre that survived the Blitz during the 2nd world war. After the war, the theatre was also used for performing arts. Luxor Rotterdam is a charming mid-size theatre and you can feel the rich history when you take a seat in the historic setting.

The Maastunnel is a tunnel in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, connecting the banks of the Nieuwe Maas. About 75,000 motor vehicles and a large number cyclists and pedestrians use the tunnel daily, making the Maastunnel an important part of Rotterdam's road network. Building commenced in 1937 and finished in 1942. There was no official opening ceremony, but the Dutch held an unofficial opening ceremony in secret without Nazi participation. Construction of the tunnel was preceded by years of animated discussions. Although there was agreement as to the need for a new permanent connection between the two banks of the Maas river, there was lack of agreement as to whether it should be a bridge or a tunnel. A tunnel proved to be more attractive financially than a bridge, largely because of the great height a bridge would have needed to avoid hindering the passage of ships from the port of Rotterdam, the largest port in Europe. The Maastunnel was built using the sunken tube or immersed tube method. Separate parts of the Maastunnel were built elsewhere in a dry dock, and then floated into place and sunk into a trench dug in the river bottom, a technique used in many other Dutch tunnels after the Maastunnel. The Maastunnel was the world's first rectangular shaped underwater tunnel built in this way. Earlier tunnels were all of a circular design. Each of the nine parts of the tunnel has a length of over 60 metres, a height of 9 metres and a width of 25 metres. They contain two adjacent tubes for motorised traffic, and two piled tubes for mopeds, cyclists and pedestrians next to it (accessible by escalator). At one time there was a laboratory in one of the ventilation buildings to examine the air quality in the tunnel. The Maastunnel was opened to the public on 14 February 1942 and was the first car tunnel in the Netherlands. At the end of the Second World War, overhead lines were installed to allow for the passage of trolleybuses. Although two buses were ready for these experimental rides, they were never used for public transportation in Rotterdam, as the overhead lines were removed from the tunnel and used to repair the Rotterdam tramway network overhead lines which had been destroyed during the bombing. In 1944 the German invaders placed explosives in the tunnel so they could destroy it at a moment's notice. Perhaps due to the sabotage of the detonators (the overhead lines) by the Dutch resistance the explosives were not detonated.

Cube houses are a set of innovative houses built in Rotterdam and Helmond, designed by architect Piet Blom and based on the concept of "living as an urban roof": high-density housing with sufficient space on the ground level since its main purpose is to optimise the space inside. Blom tilted the cube of a conventional house 45 degrees and rested it upon a hexagon-shaped pylon. His design represents a village within a city, where each house represents a tree, and all the houses together, a forest. The central idea of the cube houses around the world is mainly optimizing the space, as a house, to a better distribution of the rooms inside.

Stadion Feijenoord, more commonly known by its nickname De Kuip (the Tub), is a stadium in Rotterdam, that was completed in 1937. The name is derived from the Feijenoord district in Rotterdam, and from the club with the same name (although the club's name was internationalised to Feyenoord in 1973). The stadium's original capacity was 64,000. In 1949, it was expanded to 69,000, and in 1994 it was renovated again for a capacity of 51,117. In 1999, a significant amount of restoration and interior work took place at the stadium prior to its use as a venue in the UEFA Euro 2000 tournament, although capacity was largely unaffected.

Ahoy Rotterdam is a convention centre and arena located in Rotterdam. Since opening in 1950, the centre has hosted many exhibitions, concerts and sporting events. The centre consists of three main parts: the "Beurs- & Evenementenhallen", "Congres- & Vergadercentrum" and "Ahoy Arena". The main concert venue, the Ahoy Arena (known as the "Sportpaleis van Ahoy" from 1971-2016), opened on 15 January 1971.

A tiny piece of paradise in the big city, where the best things in life are simple: beer, BBQ, music, sunshine and good people. The food is fresh off the grill, and the beer is served ice-cold. Most nights, the music is DJs and live; on Friday evenings it’s homegrown music from Biergarten’s all-Rotterdam sound system. Biergarten is one point of the golden triangle of Schiestraat (the other two are Annabel and BAR).

The Suicide Club is Rotterdam’s first rooftop bar, atop the Groot Handelsgebouw, just a stone’s throw away from Central Station. In the inner courtyard of the building, the freight lift on the left takes you right into the kitchen on the eighth floor. The club welcomes you for lunch, exciting drinks from the champagne and cocktail bar, or five, seven or nine-course dinners until midnight with spectacular views of Delftse Poort and the Central Station. Toffler is situated in an old underpass below Weena and focuses on 21+ people who enjoy progressive electronic music. LED lights and good sound make the long tunnel warm and intimate.

From the Meent it is just a short walk to the Pannenkoekstraat, Botersloot and Nieuwe Markt in the Laurenskwartier. These streets are a quirky area full of small-scale (second-hand) fashion boutiques, bookstores, design shops and restaurants. You will be amazed by the diverse selection: from the colourful fifties clothing at Very Cherry to the unpretentious clothing and accessories at Objet Trouvé. From the most exciting children’s books at Kleine Kapitein to the sleek (Dutch) design at Depot Rotterdam.

The Groothandelsgebouw (meaning Wholesale Building or Offices) is an extensive building and monument in the centre of Rotterdam, next to the Central Station of the city. Completed in 1953 it is one of the first major buildings built after the bombing of Rotterdam in the Second World War. Because during the war much business was lost, there were early plans for new office space. The idea for a new building came from a wholesaler Frits Pot who realized that a rather large building would be smaller than tens of buildings of separate wholesalers. During Christmas 1944 he made a sketch and on May 4, 1945, it was discussed in the Chamber of Commerce. Together with architect Hugh Maaskant and (later Director) G. Thurmer he made a study trip to Chicago, the USA in 1947. The building is modelled after the Merchandise Mart in Chicago. The final building fitted exactly in the vision of Rotterdam and the post-war reconstruction of the city. The Wholesale House was an innovative project for that time: the very large building was designed not only by many companies but included a complete route through the building. During the construction phase in 1951 a grand cafe-restaurant, conference centre etc. was installed. The building itself was completed in 1953.

Arboretum Trompenburg is a botanical garden in Rotterdam, which hosts a large collection of woody as well as herbaceous plants. It occupies an area of 7 ha and is situated 4 m below sea level, so a system of canals is used to drain the land. The history of the garden dates back to the 19th century. Since 1958 it has been open to the public daily for a small fee. Arboretum Trompenburg holds national plant collections of conifers, Quercus, Fagus, Rhododendron, Ligustrum, Rodgersia and Hosta.

Erasmus University Rotterdam is a public university located in Rotterdam. The university is named after Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus, a 15th-century humanist and theologian. Erasmus MC is the largest and one of the foremost academic medical centers and trauma centers in the Netherlands, whereas its economics and business school, Erasmus School of Economics and Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University are well known in Europe and beyond. In 2017, Erasmus University Rotterdam was ranked among top ten business schools in Europe by Financial Times. In 2015, Erasmus University Rotterdam is ranked by Times Higher Education as 20th in Europe and 72nd in the world, with its social sciences as 40th, and clinical health as 35th in the world. Diergaarde Blijdorp is a zoo in the northwestern part of Rotterdam, one of the oldest zoos in the Netherlands. The Rotterdam Zoo moved to its new location in the Blijdorp district prior to the bombing of Rotterdam in World War II, which destroyed most of the city centre. The original zoo had been heavily damaged in a bombing two days prior to the Blitz but it had not been touched by the main bombardment on May 14, 1940. Some street names, such as Diergaardesingel (Zoolane), still recall the old zoo. Blijdorp was rebuilt slightly to the north, where it opened to the public in its current location on December 7, 1940. The new zoo was designed by Dutch architect Sybold van Ravesteyn, who designed the central railway station in Rotterdam, as well. In 2001, Blijdorp became almost twice as large when it opened a new western part, which includes the aquarium Oceanium. In 2007, the zoo was declared a rijksmonument. In May 2007 the zoo appeared in the news when Bokito, Blijdorp's silverback gorilla, escaped from his enclosure and seriously injured a female visitor. Before the attack, the woman was a regular visitor of the zoo (on average 4 times per week) and claimed to have a special bond with Bokito, regularly touching the glass between her and the gorilla, making eye contact and smiling to him.[4] In October 2010, the city of Rotterdam decided to reduce its yearly funding of Blijdorp from nearly 4.5 to about 0.8 million Euro until 2015.[5] The zoo and its supporters protested the decision, claiming it is unclear if the zoo can continue to operate with the reduced budget.[6] In March 2014, the zoo made headlines when a zoo cleaning worker in the giraffe exhibit dying of terminal brain cancer was taken to the exhibit and was licked by one of the giraffes; the video went viral worldwide quickly.[7]

The former Van Nelle Factory (Dutch: Van Nellefabriek) on the Schie river in Rotterdam, is considered a prime example of the International Style (see also Constructivism). It has been a designated World Heritage Site since 2014. Soon after it was built, prominent architects described the factory as "the most beautiful spectacle of the modern age" (Le Corbusier in 1932) and "a poem in steel and glass" (Robertson and Yerbury in 1930).

Rotterdam The Hague Airport, located north-northwest of Rotterdam, is the Netherlands' third largest airport. It serves the city of Rotterdam as well as The Hague and surroundings. The airport handled over 1.6 million passengers in 2016 and features scheduled flights to European metropolitan and leisure destinations. It is also used extensively by general aviation and there are several flying clubs and schools located at the airport.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, known informally as Schiphol, is the main international airport of the Netherlands. It is located 9 kilometres (5.6 miles) southwest of Amsterdam, in the municipality of Haarlemmermeer, North Holland. It is the third busiest airport in Europe in terms of passengers. The airport is built as a single-terminal concept: one large terminal split into three large departure halls. Schiphol is the hub for KLM and its regional affiliate KLM Cityhopper as well as for Corendon Dutch Airlines, Martinair, Transavia and TUI fly Netherlands. The airport also serves as a European hub for Delta Air Lines and Jet Airways and as a base for EasyJet, Small Planet Airlines and Vueling. Schiphol opened on 16 September 1916 as a military airbase. The end of the First World War also saw the beginning of the civilian use of Schiphol Airport and the airport eventually lost its military role completely. By 1940, Schiphol had four asphalt runways at 45-degree angles. The airport was captured by the German military that same year and renamed Fliegerhorst Schiphol. The airport was destroyed through bombing but at the end of the war, the airfield was restored quickly. In 1949, it was decided that Schiphol was to become the primary airport of the Netherlands.
