Has your hotel taken steps to reduce single-use plastics, such as removing plastic straws (except upon request for guests with disabilities), stirrers and cotton buds? If yes, please provide detail as to the steps you have taken to reduce single use plastics?
Steps to Reduce Single-Use Plastics at Holiday Inn Express Edmonton Downtown 1. Assess and Audit Current Plastic Use Conduct a thorough inventory of all single-use plastics used in guest rooms, restaurants, bars, conference rooms, and back-of-house areas. Identify high-impact items like plastic straws, stirrers, cotton buds, plastic water bottles, and disposable cutlery. 2. Develop a Plastic Reduction Policy Formalize a policy to eliminate unnecessary single-use plastics in all hotel operations. Explicitly state that plastic straws will only be provided upon request, especially for guests with disabilities or special needs. Include alternatives for stirrers and cotton buds. 3. Switch to Sustainable Alternatives Replace plastic straws with biodegradable paper straws or reusable metal/ bamboo straws (kept available upon request). Use wooden or bamboo stirrers instead of plastic. Swap out plastic cotton buds for paper-stemmed cotton swabs or eliminate them where possible. Move to bulk dispensers for toiletries to avoid mini plastic bottles. 4. Staff Training and Communication Train all front desk, restaurant, and housekeeping staff about the new plastic reduction policy. Emphasize the importance of offering straws only upon request, and ensuring that guests needing accommodations receive them discreetly. Provide clear guidance on handling guest questions or concerns with empathy. 5. Guest Engagement and Signage Display friendly signage in guest rooms, restaurants, and bars explaining the initiative and its environmental benefits. Highlight how guests can request plastic straws or other items if needed. Use in-room information cards, website updates, and booking confirmations to communicate your commitment to reducing single-use plastics. 6. Monitor and Measure Impact Track reductions in plastic straw, stirrer, and cotton bud usage monthly. Collect guest feedback and staff input to fine-tune the program. Report progress internally and externally as part of your sustainability communications. 7. Collaborate with Suppliers Work closely with your suppliers to source high-quality sustainable alternatives. Encourage suppliers to minimize plastic packaging. 8. Expand the Initiative Once successful with straws, stirrers, and cotton buds, extend the program to other single-use plastic items, such as water bottles, takeaway containers, and bags.

Yes, Holiday Inn Express Edmonton Downtown follows enhanced cleaning and disinfection routines for all guest room textiles and high-contact surfaces, in alignment with IHG’s Clean Promise and local health guidelines. 🧼 Specific Cleaning/Disinfection Routines for Key Items 🛏️ Pillows, Duvets & Covers All pillowcases, sheets, and duvet covers are completely removed and laundered after each guest stay—not reused between guests. Linens are washed at high temperatures with hospital-grade detergent to eliminate viruses, bacteria, and allergens. Pillows and duvets themselves are sanitized or replaced regularly on a maintenance cycle or immediately if visibly soiled or requested. 🪵 Headboards Hard surface headboards are cleaned and disinfected daily with Health Canada-approved disinfectants, with extra attention to touchpoints like edges and reading lights. For upholstered headboards, special fabric-safe sanitizing sprays are used after each guest stay. 🛁 Bathrobes (if provided) Bathrobes are laundered after each use with high-temperature wash cycles. Packaged, sanitized bathrobes may be available upon request to reduce handling. 🧴 Additional Disinfection Measures High-touch items like TV remotes, light switches, telephones, and nightstands are disinfected as part of the 10-point high-touch cleaning checklist used by trained housekeeping staff. Rooms are inspected after cleaning to ensure all protocols have been followed. These protocols reflect our commitment to providing a safe, clean, and comfortable environment for all our guests. If needed, we can also provide allergen-free bedding or additional protective covers on request.
