成田空港に近い日本でも有数の有名なお寺には、毎年世界中から何百万人もの人々が訪れます。成田山新勝寺の歴史は、嵯峨天皇の要請により弘法大師（空海、真言宗の開祖、774年-835年）が主祭神として寺内に祀られてきた不動明王の像に始まる。
元々は当時の首都・京都の高尾山神護寺に安置されていた。天慶 2 年（939 年）平将門が朱雀天皇に反乱を起こすと、灌頂僧は朱雀天皇から密命を受けて反乱鎮圧に当たった。彼は不動明王をイメージした地区に行き、平和のために3週間の護摩儀式を行った。奇跡的に、護摩儀礼の最終日、940年の2月14日に、反乱は完全に鎮圧された。灌頂僧はその職務を果たし、不動明王像を持って京都に帰還する準備をしたが、巨大な石のように不思議に成長し、動かすことができなかったことがわかった。やがて彼は不動明王の「私の願いが叶わなかった。永遠にここにいて、無数の人々が苦しみから解放したいです。」不動明王の慈悲に深く感銘を受けた朱雀天皇は、その場所に像を安置するために寺院を建立するよう命じた。その後、閑乗僧によって成田山新勝寺が建立された。
