Lubbock Moonlight Musicals inspires audiences throughout the summer with fun and exciting musicals at their outdoor amphitheater located in Mackenzie Park. Making use of local talent, as well as bringing in various Broadway professionals, Lubbock Moonlight Musicals is able to produce shows that thrill all audiences, from sophisticated theater viewers to first-timers. The organization also hosts shows year-round at The Christine DeVitt Icehouse and Lubbock Memorial Civic Center theaters.
From 1942 to 1944, Lubbock was home to the majority of American Glider Pilots and their flight training for World War II. To preserve their history and bravery, the Silent Wings Museum tells the story of the U.S. Glider Program through three exhibit galleries, a C-47 airplane, a research library, multimedia theater and one of the few fully restored World War II gliders in existence.
Smithsonian Magazine recently named this Lubbock landmark one of the top five destinations to see evidence of first Americans. In fact, evidence of human life from 12,000 years ago has been uncovered at the Lubbock Lake National Historic Landmark. This internationally recognized archaeological and natural history preserve provides a perfect family outing and regularly hosts night hikes on a 3-mile scenic trail through the Yellow House Canyon. The site even features special events like Archaeology in Action, where visitors can interact and observe excavators and lab crews as they work, an experience not usually open to the public.
Home to more than 170 rare and fully restored windmills spread out on 28 acres of rolling hills, the American Wind Power Center is known as the largest windmill museum in the world. After viewing the collection, be sure to check out the 6,000-square-foot “Legacy of the Wind” mural that represents the past, present and future of the windmill. It took the artist, LaGina Fairbetter, two years to paint the larger-than-life mural. Visitors are sure to leave with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the American-style, water-pumping windmills that shaped much of the country’s pioneering technology efforts.
The Fibermax Center for Discovery features interactive exhibits and historical displays dating back to the pioneering years of agriculture. Unique exhibits include 71 pedal tractors, 700 collectible toy tractors, a 1920s replica Blacksmith shop, an exhibit on the history of cotton ginning and a new addition with meeting facilities and interactive displays.
There’s no better place in Lubbock than Prairie Dog Town to watch these pint-sized critters in their natural habitat. Prairie Dog Town was the first protected prairie dog colony of its kind and is located in the majestic Mackenzie Park.
