The Philharmonie is a splendid 19th century concert hall, which subtly combines the classical grandeur of high ceilings and chandeliers with modern industrial architecture. The venue comprises eight halls and two spacious foyers, and can accommodate a maximum of 3500 people. During the course of its renovation, the Philharmonie was also fully adapted to meet contemporary requirements in terms of lighting, acoustics and audio-visual equipment, while it offers (free) Wi-Fi throughout the premises. Extra capacity The adjoining Toneelschuur offers one the option of expanding the capacity of the Philharmonie to include another six rooms (additional capacity of up to 680 people). Grand Hall The Philharmonie’s largest hall, the classical concert hall, is highly multifunctional, as it has a flexible seating plan and a moveable floor. In its theatre layout, the hall can accommodate audiences of up to 1220. The theatre seats are moveable and can therefore be set up according to requirements, or even removed from the hall. 350 m² of floor of the hall (measuring 551 m² in total) can be flexibly utilised: it takes just ten seconds to convert the sloping gallery into a level floor. This adaptation enables the creation of literally any hall layout required: from a debate setting to a stage or catwalk in the middle of the hall. This makes the flexible Grand Hall the ideal venue for conferences, gala dinners and expos alike. The showpiece of the hall is its 19th century Cavaillé-Coll organ, which comprises some 4000 pipes.

New furnishings The idea of redeveloping ‘the Philharmonie as a platform for Dutch Design’ was conceived by the Philharmonie’s architect, Frits van Dongen, and was developed and implemented in cooperation with his firm, Van Dongen-Koschuch. The plan combines the buildings own modern and historical architecture with a collection of furniture by Dutch designers. This also lends the designers a platform for the exhibition and sale of their works. In return, the building’s foyers have been equipped with a range of durable, functional and comfortable furniture which creates an intimate yet state-of-the-art ambience.
