Liberty Station, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, offers a selection of restaurants with local flare, as well as shopping and parks. This a mixed use retail and residential center, served the United States Navy as the Naval Training Center between the mid 1920s through the early 1990s. The end of the Cold War led to military downsizing and the need to close surplus bases. The Federal Base Realignment and Closure Commission eventually slated the NTC for closure in 1993. The land was turned over to the City of San Diego, which transformed it into a venue to serve the community.
