We owe the Château d'Écouen to Duke Anne de Montmorency. Since 1977, it has hosted the National Renaissance Museum. The collections include an exceptional set of decorative arts, paintings and sculptures.
The property of a great Renaissance lord, Anne de Montmorency, who grew up in the intimacy of François I and then prospered under the protection of Henri II, Écouen is not a residence like any other: its stones bear witness to the ambitions and successes of a powerful man who was also a patron of the arts and an aesthete with a passion for art.
This ardent collector, often in the vanguard of taste, was also the heir to a colossal fortune, which he further increased through a judicious acquisitions policy, his marriage to Madeleine of Savoy and royal favour. By the time of his death in 1567, he owned some 130 châteaux throughout France and two residences in Paris, including his mansion on rue Sainte-Avoye, which he endowed with a gallery painted by Nicolo dell'Abbate. All these locations were the scene of reconstructions, refurbishments and even genuine architectural projects, such as the small château at Chantilly (1559) and the stunning gallery-bridge at Fère-en-Tardenois, both designed by Jean Bullant. But Écouen remains his masterpiece.

This new way of discovering a city via a walking tour with various challenges is a great way to learn about its history and discover its layout.

Each Tourist Scavenger Hunt is around 40 steps, 2-3 hours in duration on a 3-4km circuit which brings you back to the start.
