The airport is located in the city of Liberia in Guanacaste Province. It serves as a hub for the affluent tourism that visits Costa Rica's Pacific coast. Currently named for Daniel Oduber Quirós, who served as President of Costa Rica from 1974 to 1978, the airport was inaugurated in 1975. In 2012, Guanacaste Airport was recognized by Travel+Leisure as “One of the Coolest Airports” and also 2012 “most Improved Airport” by Jaunted. 2016 represented an outstanding growth of 108% of passengers traffic in 5 years. LIR is committed to the environment and it has been certified as the first National Airport with a Four Stars Ecologic Blue Flag. Also, it has been recertified as ISO 14000 International Environment Management Standard and ISO 9001.
