Parmi les villes et villages de la Costa Brava, Cadaqués se distingue par son authenticité et sa singularité. Le nom de Cadaqués pourrait résulter de l'évolution du « Cap de Quers » (cap rocheux) en raison de la grande quantité de roches, en particulier dans la région du Cap de Creus. Une autre option est que Cadaqués dérive de « cadaquer » ou « cadaquers » (forêt de càdecs : arbuste de cette zone côtière). Une troisième possibilité est que Cadaqués soit la combinaison de deux mots d'origine grecque, kata-kairus, port occasionnel (car les Grecs utilisaient ce port sur leurs routes commerciales lorsque le mauvais temps les obligeait à interrompre le passage).
Située dans la partie orientale de la péninsule du Cap de Creus, la ville, considérée comme le joyau de la Costa Brava, a une histoire millénaire qui remonte à l'époque des Ibères.
