Xcaret was opened in December 1990 as an eco-archeological park where visitors from all over the world can enjoy the splendor of Mexico’s biodiversity and cultural heritage. Due to its great success the park has been preserved with an environmental management system. Today the use of sun tan lotions is controlled by offering visitors over 250 samples of eco-friendly sun block lotion every day. More than 108 gallons of water are daily reused for irrigation throughout the park and each month Xcaret produces 160 tons of compost which is used to fertilize green areas and the plant nursery.
Xcaret is also dedicated to promote marine turtle conservation of two species that arrives every year to Quintana Roo’s coastline to nest: loggerhead and green sea turtle.

Chichen Itza city was the most important capital city of the Maya area in the Classic period and the beginning of Post Classic. When Spaniards arrived, it was the most visited center of cult and pilgrimage of Yucatan Peninsula. Chichen Itza and the Cenote of Sacrifices were, and still are, sacred centers for the Maya.
This is a Cultural Heritage Zone of Mexico, and due to its importance was inscribed in UNESCO World Heritage list in 1988.
Chichen Itza holds uttermost valuable information of Pre Hispanic past. Due to its beauty and singularity, it is a cultural referent for Mexicans and a symbol of national and indigenous identity.
The Pre Hispanic city of Chichen Itza is nowadays a tourist destination visited each year by more than a million people. The most prominent building of the metropolis, Kukulcan Pyramid, known as El Castillo, has become an emblem of the Maya culture all over the world.
As the pole of tourist attraction it has become, Chichen Itza faces the great challenge of achieving sustainable development and at the same time, guarantee the integral conservation of the legacy of generations to come.
The area that can be visited is 47 hectares long, but the protected zone of Chichen Itza is more than 15 square kilometers, and includes all of the monumental buildings of the city. This delimitation is known as Protection Polygonal.
The National Institute of History and Anthropology (INAH) is in charge of the protection, study and outreach of the Archaeological Heritage in Mexico. In Chichen Itza, several research and conservation projects are held by an interdisciplinary group of professionals that includes archaeologists, restorers and anthropologists, as well as specialized workers that live in the surrounding areas.
Golf Course designed by Nick Price
Grand Coral Riviera Maya Resort is an excellent example of the way in which golf course designers and developers are working proactively with environmental groups and government agencies, among others, to create golf courses that are planned, constructed and maintained according to a set of standards that fulfill and even surpass local and federal environmental requirements.
The exclusive location of our new resort in Mexico–within the city limits of Playa del Carmen right next to the Caribbean Sea–presents a unique challenge for a greens designer: that of creating a Riviera Maya golf course that satisfies the needs of the area’s growing population while, whenever possible, protecting native vegetation and minimizing the need for excess water consumption.
The vision of golf course designer Nick Price was to create a golf course that naturally adjusted and was sensitive to the beauty of the already existing environment.
The design team carried out a planning and routing study in conjunction with a team of carefully selected experts made up of the Grupo Grand Coral Developer, wildlife consultants, biologists, civil engineers and environmental consultants. The planning team identified the following areas and issues that require careful handling of the land:
Wildlife conservation and improvement of their habitat.
Water conservation.
Water quality management.
Erosion and sedimentation control plan.
All-encompassing pest management program.
16th century sources designate the site as "Zama", possibly related to the Mayan Word for "tomorrow", which is understandable because it is located in the highest area of the East Coast, where to watch the Sunrise is a wonderful spectacle.
The name of Tulum, therefore, appears to be relatively recent. Translated into Spanish as "wall" or "Palisade", in clear reference to the wall that is preserved here, this name seems to have been employed to designate the city when it was already in ruins. The site was named Tulum in the 19th century, when Stephens and Catherwood "rediscovered it" completely abandoned, just before the start of the Indian uprising known as "War of chaste" (1847).
Tulum is one of the American sites more formerly registered by the Western world. In 1518, the Spanish chronicler Juan Díaz recounted having seen a "big Seville" city, with a tower which was no doubt El Castillo de Tulum, place occupied at the time by the inhabitants of that independent maya headquarters.
Archaeological studies published in recent years indicate that there is consistent evidence to assure that Tulum would have been one of the major Mayan cities of the 13th and 14th centuries. Researcher Ernesto Vargas highlights its strategic location between the provinces (kuchkabaloob) of Cochuah and Cozumel, which, coupled with its location on the highest elevation of the region and its efficient defensive system, became an unavoidable settlement for any commercial route and the exploitation of the rich maritime resources off the coast of Quintana Roo. According to the author mentioned, Tulum would have worked politically as a settlement (or batabil) independent of the domain of other provinces, until practically the arrival of the Spaniards in the 16th century, when it was definitely abandoned.
In addition, Tulum is the best known and most publicized of Quintana Roo, and can not miss on the itinerary of any visitor. Although known more for the beauty of its beaches, urban design, the wall and the wall paintings are inescapable attractions of the archaeological site.
Isla Mujeres is located on the coast East of the the Yucatan Peninsula, facing the Bay of Cancun. Just 7.5 km long and 500 meters wide, received its name in the 16th century when the Spanish encountered hundreds of sculptures of the female gender. The locals are fishermen and divers who have lived here for generations; people who wish to retain the island as a paradise. The sunset is spectacular: a ball of fire which goes down on the water, behind the urban landscape of Cancun. On the island you will find many places of interest like the Garrafon National Park, a Mayan Temple and a turtle farm. For lovers of diving, El Farito reefs, Punta Norte and Manchones, as well as the cave of the sleeping sharks are.
Beyond the breathtaking waters and ribbons of white sand is a land steeped in rich history and ancient wonders.
And at every turn, there is something exciting to discover and explore. From the majestic archeological site in San Gervasio to the rustic, vivid green church in El Cedral, Cozumel has many stories to share. And their origins go back to 300 A.D. when the first Mayans settled on the island.
Before there were vacation seekers, there were religious pilgrimages, as many women came to pay homage to the fertility goddess, Ixchel. Through every passing century, Cozumel became one of the most important sanctuaries in the Yucatan region. And the Mayan influence remains today.
But that is just the beginning. Let us take you on a guided tour and uncover the magic of the ancient Maya. You’ll soon realize why this is like no other island in the world.
Holbox ("black hole" in Yucatec Maya) is an island in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, located on the north coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. It is approximately 41,84 kilometers long and 1.5 kilometers wide, and it is separated from the mainland by a shallow lagoon that is home to flamingos, pelicans and other rich birdlife. Holbox Island is part of the Municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas and also part of the Yum-Balam Biosphere Reserve.
Not yet heavily touristed, the island's main industry is fishing. However, the island is developing a growing tourist industry in the form of whale shark viewing.
The island is accessed by ferry from the mainland town of Chiquila, and has virtually no cars, with transport by most residents and tourists by golf cart or moped. A small airline, Aerosaab, flies tours to Holbox from Cancún and Playa del Carmen; there is even a small airstrip to accommodate Aerosaab's five-seater Cessna aircraft.
The entrance of vehicles is not allowed at Holbox in order to protect the environment and to prevent the streets from getting sand.
Holbox has several alternatives to enjoy nature, but the one that attracts most visitors is the experience of swimming with the impressive whale shark from June to September, an opportunity you can experience in very few parts of the world.
Another alternative is “Isla Pájaros” (Bird Island), a small island covered in mangrove swamps and cacti, located on the Yalahau lagoon, where there is a large diversity of birds, some of them are in danger of extinction, that’s why there are two observation points and walkways – to minimize the direct contact with the birds. Flamingos, cormorants, herons, frigate birds, pelicans, wild ducks and seagulls are just some of the species you can observe in a still natural environment.
