The 18th Olympic Winter Games were hosted in Nagano in 1998, and that event is well-known for having been held there. From the city, the gentle-looking Iizuna Heights rises to the north, while the mountains of the Togakushi Range and the tall peaks of the Northern Japan Alps can be seen soaring in the distance.
