Covering over 125 hectares and comprising more than 15,000 trees, El Retiro Park–recently named a UNESCO World Heritage Site–is a green oasis in the heart of the city. In it you’ll find all kinds of interesting monuments and gardens, including Jardín de Vivaces, Jardines de Cecilio Rodríguez (Andalusian-inspired classicistic gardens), Jardines del Arquitecto Herrero Palacios, the recently-restored Cat Mountain, the Rosaleda rose garden and Parterre Francés, which holds a Mexican conifer that is nearly 400 years old and is believed to be Madrid’s oldest tree. In addition to its role as one of the city’s green lungs, it is also a popular spot among Madrileños who like to go there for a stroll, to do some sport, visit an exhibition or take the kids to a puppet show. The park is home to a large artificial lake, where you can rent a rowing boat, and to the Velázquez Palace and Glass Palace which are both currently used as exhibition halls by the Reina Sofía Museum. The latter is a beautiful glass pavilion built in 1887 to house exotic plants for an exhibition on the Philippines. It is one the finest examples of cast-iron architecture in Spain.

The National Archaeological Museum is a public institution. Its mission is to offer the general public an accurate, attractive, interesting and critical interpretation of the objects that belonged to the different cultures which populated the Iberian Peninsula and the Mediterranean region, ranging from Antiquity to more recent periods, in the firm belief that a knowledge of this history can shed light on society as we know it today. Founded in 1867 by Queen Isabella II, following the European trend of creating great national museums to exhibit the evidence of each nation’s past. Its founding satisfied the demand for a major institution where the collections of historical artefacts scattered among various establishments could be brought together under one roof with the aim of documenting the entire history of Spain, from its beginnings to the present day, and offering an overview of ancient civilisations from around the world.

The palatial building was constructed in 1903 as the residence of Lázaro Galdiano and his wife and is set within grounds that also hold the library containing Galdiano's important collection of incunabula and manuscripts. The conversion to a museum has respected the original interiors, which feature elaborate baroque painted ceilings commissioned by Galdiano. The Museum contains important collections of important works of from the prehistoric period to the nineteenth century, with a focus on Iberian work. Major categories include jewelery, small bronzes, both ecclesiastical and domestic silver, ceramics, carved ivory, and numismatics. Objects come not only from Iberia, but from major centers of medieval artistry including Limoges and Egypt. While the Renaissance is especially well represented, the collection features important early medieval objects including Visigothic work, and works crafted by Iberia's ancient Celtic culture. The painting collection includes work by: - Bosch (St. John the Baptist in the Wilderness) - Goya (Witches' Sabbath and other works) - George Romney - El Greco - Joshua Reynolds - Velázquez - Zurbarán
