Visit Macon, Where Soul Lives

Join us in “the Heart of Georgia!" Macon is an easily accessible travel hub, positioned at the cross-section of two major interstates and just 80 miles South of an International airport. Nowhere else can you host a reception at the former home of the famed Allman Brothers Band, a banquet at the largest state sports museum in the U.S. or a conference at one of the most advanced antebellum buildings in the country. But it is possible in Macon, which offers more than 10 meeting venues and 20 hotels with meeting space. Whether you're looking for a meeting destination for 20 or 10,000, you'll find Macon's unique venues and conference facilities ready to meet your expectations with great space and quality service, whatever your budget. What truly sets Macon apart as a premier meeting destination is how your guests can explore different attractions, shops, restaurants and more! Hike through the nation's next national park and enter North America's only reconstructed earth lodge at the Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park or take in the Southeast's largest collection of African-American art, history and culture at the Tubman Museum. Stroll along the Ocmulgee River or downtown’s wide boulevards, lined with art galleries, boutiques, restaurants, entertainment venues, and architecture as diverse as the people who built it. Macon is home to many legendary musical artists such as Otis Redding, Little Richard, the Allman Brothers Band and new voices, like country singer Jason Aldean. Macon’s nightlife choices give you many options to choose from, so decide which Macon venue amplifies your evening. Order the beverage of your choice at one of our microbreweries, and sit in on open mic night, catching the next rising star to come out of this musical city. Sample some of our favorite soul food or try signature dishes from our vibrant local restaurants. Macon is a town where a “night out” is fine dining, drinks, and dancing, but also a moonlit walk among the architectural masterpieces of our historic neighborhoods, and a Broadway-level performance at one of our landmark theatres like the Grand Opera House. Don’t forget, your guests can download for free the “Tour Macon” mobile app and find self-guided tours that cover a wide range of Macon’s history like the Macon Music Trail, Macon Black Heritage Trail, or the Macon Bacon Trail!

In the mid-1800s, William Butler Johnston was the keeper of the Confederate treasury, but the mansion he built is the real treasure he left behind. Inspired by the palazzos of Florence and Rome during a three-year honeymoon in Europe, Johnston and his wife, Anne, spent four years building an 18,000-square-foot Italian Renaissance Revival mansion that is now a National Historic Landmark. Considered the most advanced antebellum building in America for its style, craftsmanship and technological innovations, the magnificent seven-level Hay House has been featured on A&E's "America's Castles." It boasts beautiful 18th-Century furnishings, Italian Carrera marble fireplaces, some of the country's finest examples of marbleized and trompe l'oeil finishes, a music room with a 30-foot clerestory ceiling, exquisite plaster work with 24-karat gold leafing and spectacular stained glass. The mansion is called the Hay House for its last owners and residents, the P.L. Hay family, who conveyed the property in 1977 to The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, the country's largest statewide non-profit preservation organization. Hay House is available for functions and guided tours. Hours: Monday - Saturday 10 am - 4 pm; Sunday 1 pm - 4 pm. Tours are on the hour with the last tour at 3 pm.

The Allman Brothers Band was formed in March 1969 by legendary guitarist Duane Allman. Along with his brother Gregg, Dickey Betts, Butch Tucks, Jaimoe and Berry Oakley, the band combined a wicked brew of blues, rock, jazz and country into a new musical genre. In January 1970, Berry Oakley and his wife Linda rented a Tudor-style house on Vineville Avenue in Macon, Georgia. Duane and Gregg moved in as well. The house, "The Big House" became the center of the band's activities during those early years. Today, the Big House has been restored as an Allman Brothers Band Museum, showcasing guitars and other musical instruments, clothing, photos, posters, gold records and a vast collection of memorabilia. The collection of band memorabilia and artifacts is the most extensive in the world.
