After the Meiji Restoration, when the Shimazu clan's residence, Kagoshima Castle, became government property, it was temporarily used as the main residence of the Shimazu clan.

Yunohira Observatory is the highest point on Mt. Sakurajima open to the general public. From the observatory, you can see a rough lava field and, at times, rising plumes of volcanic smoke. This spot commands a picturesque view of Kagoshima City and the calm waters of Kinko Bay. The night brings a beautiful view in which the pitch dark of Mt. Sakurajima contrasts with the lights of Kagoshima City. Taking inspiration from the name Sakurajima (cherry blossom island), the roof over the observation deck is shaped like a cherry blossom petal.

Chiran Peace Museum

33 km
Chiran Peace Museum exhibits many articles and portfolios left by the deceased soldiers who fought for Japan during the final moments of World War II. The last battle took place in Okinawa. The bloodshed was unprecedented in the Japanese war effort up to that point. The soldiers represented in the Museum died as Army tokkō pilots of special attack forces. The accumulation of the many articles which are exhibited in here today are due to the assistance of many friends and relatives of these deceased pilots. It was the relative's mission to ensure that the sacrifices made by each pilot would never be forgotten. The pilot's last wish was that Japan would be peaceful and prosperous once more. Today Japan is very prosperous. We should be grateful to the pilots for this.

In addition to a Japanese-style garden and a Japanese sago palm garden, the approximately 40,000 azaleas envelope the area around the fountain in bright, lush colors. Kawazu-zakura cherry blossoms are in full bloom in late February, while normal cherry trees bloom in April.
