Passage

Historiallinen maamerkki
The Passage is the only remaining example in the Netherlands of this type of covered shopping street, popular in major European and American cities during the 19th century. The new extension of the monumental construction towards Grote Marktstraat has given rise to a hypermodern indoor shopping arcade: Nieuwe Haagse Passage. A veritable shopping paradise: dry and sheltered, with the latest collections from top stores! The old Passage With the advent of the Passage at the end of the 19th century, it was expected that the Passage retailers would now stock the luxury goods that had previously been ordered privately in Paris. Until that time, department stores in cities such as Paris sent many of their goods to the Netherlands by mail. The Passage is still characterized by this superior quality, specialized product range today. The Passage is the place to be for items such as tea, coffee, cookware, designer gifts and special pens. It also houses one of the biggest Apple Stores in Europe. The new Passage In keeping with the historical section of De Passage, the new section boasts a high, glass ceiling, but with a modern twist. Architect Bernard Tschumi has given Nieuwe Haagse Passage a very light and open design. Tschumi drew inspiration from Delft Blue for the blue and white tiled ceramic facade. The new section of De Passage creates an attractive connection between Grote Marktstraat and Spuistraat with countless unique stores.

Inner Court - Hall of Knights

Historiallinen maamerkki
Step through the famous entry gate into the historical Binnenhof (Inner Court) in the heart of our democracy. This is the place where the most important events in the nation's history took place. It is also where the future is created. The Inner Court in The Hague is studded with monumental old buildings testifying of eight centuries of governing in the Low Countries, but it also has several ample open spaces, all freely open to the public. The Binnenhof is a must-see if you're in The Hague. Take a stroll through the courtyard and admire the fairytale-like splendour or take the time to take a tour through the various halls. The Binnenhof is situated in the heart of The Hague’s city centre. It has been the location of meetings of the Dutch parliament, the Staten-Generaal, since 1446, and has been the centre of Dutch politics for many centuries. The grounds on which the Binnenhof now stands were purchased by Count Floris IV of Holland in 1229, where he built his mansion, next to the modest lake that has been called Hofvijver or 'Court Pond' since the 13th century. More buildings were constructed around the court, several of which are well known in their own right, such as the Ridderzaal (Great hall; literally Knight's Hall), where King Willem-Alexander holds his annual speech at Prinsjesdag (Prince's Day). One of the towers, simply known as het Torentje ('the Little Tower'; directly next to the Mauritshuis) has been the office of the Prime Minister of Holland since 1982.

Escher in The Palace

Museo
Escher in The Palace is a permanent exhibition dedicated to the world-famous Dutch artist M.C. Escher. The collection is housed in the former Winter Palace of Queen Mother Emma of the Netherlands. Escher’s magical art instills a sense of bewilderment and wonder, and fascinates young and old alike. The exhibition includes famous ‘impossible’ prints such as ‘Day and Night’, where the Dutch landscape appears to morph into a flock of birds, and ‘Climbing and Descending’ which depicts rows of people perpetually ascending and descending a flight of stairs. With over 150 prints you can always see the best-known works and a changing selection of graphic work and tesselations from Escher’s complete works. A highlight is the 7-meters long Metamorphosis III. This enormous woodcut and the non-conventional way of displaying it enables the visitor to truly experience the way in which Escher combines time and space as an organic unity.
