La catedral de Vitoria se encuentra en la parte más alta de la colina sobre la que se construyó el antiguo asentamiento de Gasteiz, dentro de los límites de las antiguas murallas de la ciudad. La colina, con la catedral en su extremo norte, corre de norte a sur unos veinte metros por encima de la llanura alavesa que la rodea en todas direcciones. La propia catedral está construida sobre una parte de esta pendiente, como lo demuestra el hecho de que sus murallas sur y oeste, que dan a la ciudad vieja situada en un terreno más alto, se elevan aproximadamente nueve metros por encima de su fachada noreste, que se encuentra a mitad de la colina. Como resultado de estas condiciones geográficas e históricas, el subsuelo del edificio contiene una gran cantidad de tierra importada, traída especialmente para ayudar a nivelar la superficie del suelo del interior de la catedral. Otra consecuencia del paisaje irregular es la enorme diferencia de altura de las paredes entre un lado y el otro del edificio. Esto explica el grosor de sus paredes, que originalmente no tenían ventanas en el lado norte, así como la presencia de un paseo amurallado, que recorría toda la longitud del edificio, desde el extremo sur de su crucero hasta la esquina noroeste de su pórtico, pasando por el deambulatorio, el crucero y la nave norte.
