Historia universitaria Al firmar «Scientiae Thesaurus Mirabilis», el rey Dinis creó la universidad más antigua del país y una de las más antiguas del mundo. El documento, fechado en 1290, dio origen al Estudio General, reconocido ese mismo año por el Papa Nicolás IV. Un siglo después del nacimiento de la nación, la Universidad de Coimbra germinó. Comienza a funcionar en Lisboa pero, en 1308, se traslada a Coimbra, alternando entre las dos ciudades hasta 1537, cuando se instala definitivamente en la ciudad del río Mondego. Inicialmente confinada al Palacio Real, la Universidad se extendió por toda la ciudad de Coimbra, modificando su paisaje y convirtiéndola en la Ciudad Universitaria. Posteriormente se amplió con la creación del Polo II, dedicado a la Ingeniería y la Tecnología, y con un tercer polo dedicado a las Ciencias de la Vida. Estudiar en la Universidad de Coimbra es estudiar la historia intelectual del país en la escuela en la que se graduaron algunas de las personalidades más destacadas de la cultura, la ciencia y la política nacionales. Con más de siete siglos, la Universidad de Coimbra cuenta con un patrimonio material e inmaterial único, piedra angular de la cultura científica de Europa y el mundo; una capital que la Universidad de Coimbra ha incorporado al Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO.
