Additional Information
On September 3, 1729, a grant was made by the General Court of Massachusetts to allow a small group of very poor residents from the towns around Medfield settle in the Sturbridge area, despite the objection that the land there was generally poor. On July 9, 1730, lots were drawn to determine who would get each of the 50 plots laid out in what was originally called New Medfield. From this emerged the town of Sturbridge, officially incorporated in 1783 and named after Stourbridge, England. Both towns are perhaps not coincidentally located close to Worcester, MA and Worcester, England, respectively. Today Sturbridge is conveniently located where I-90 and I-84 meet, putting most of New England within easy reach. The town is both an old, quaint rural village surrounded by nature and an exciting site of a growing high tech industry, meaning there is a wide variety of attractions to Sturbridge. We are known for our varied restaurants, providing the visitor with a true taste of New England.
