Camelback became a Phoenix city park in 1968 and hiking it is one of the top 10 things to do in Phoenix according to Trip Advisor. The most common Flora on the Mountain are the Saguaro Cactus, Ocotillo, Palo Verde, Cholla, Barrel Cactus and the Creosote Bush. Rescues on the Mountain happen often so please proceed with CAUTION and know your limits. It is important to leave the Mountain the way you found it so whatever you bring in be sure to bring it back out. There are 2 hiking trails, Echo Canyon and Cholla. Both trails are difficult, while Echo Canyon is steeper and Cholla is longer. Parking for both trails is only allowed from sunrise to sunset so plan accordingly. Piestewa Peak Summit Trail #300 is a 2.2 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Phoenix, Arizona that features beautiful wild flowers and is only recommended for very experienced adventurers. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from October until March. Surrounding the base of 2,608-foot Piestewa Peak, Phoenix Mountains Park and Recreation Area, and Dreamy Draw Recreation Area are gateways into diverse desert landscapes that offer everything from fantastic views to secluded valleys. Those trailheads boast dozens of miles of trails. The infamous Piestewa Peak Summit Trail is an out and back trail that rewards successful hikers with a three-hundred-sixty-degree view of the Phoenix metropolitan area. While short in length, a little over one mile, the trail is steep, jagged, and consists of multiple switchbacks and modified steps with integrated sections of gravel and rock. This summit trail has been a Phoenix favorite for several decades and is internationally recognized among hiking communities. Water, parking, and restrooms are available at the base of the trail. The Freedom Trail is an awesome circumference trail that skirts the base of Piestewa Peak. The trail is moderately difficult and has multiple rocky sections. Trail users may encounter a variety of the native wildlife and an occasional coyote is observed on the trail. The southwestern portion of this loop is shared with the Piestewa Summit Trail. This trail provides spectacular views of the Phoenix metropolitan area. This loop around the entire mountain peak offers great views of Piestewa Peak and other secluded areas near the trailhead. A restroom and drinking fountain are located near the trailhead.
