In Lemmer, you will find the Woudagemaal Pumping Station. The Ir. D.F. Woudagemaal is the largest steam pumping station still in operation in the world. The Woudagemaal was opened in 1920 by Queen Wilhelmina and was tasked with pumping out surplus water from Friesland into the Zuiderzee, and later the IJsselmeer. It is still used today for this same purpose, several times a year.
