On your visit to the Grote Markt, don't forget to take a look at the Grote Kerk. This 14th-century cruciform church is built in Gothic style and serves as the final resting place of a number of famous Haarlem citizens, including Frans Hals and Willem Bilderdijk. Although the building has had a tempestuous history with severe lightning and fire damage, its beauty has remained untouched.

The most important museums of museum-rich Amsterdam are located at Museumplein. This largest square of Amsterdam is bordered by some excellent museums like the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum, and Moco Museum. The square was reconstructed in 1999 by the Swedish landscape architect Sven-Ingvar Andersson. It is used for (mass) events such as festivals, celebrations, and demonstrations. It includes underground parking spaces and an underground supermarket. In the winter, the pond is being transformed into an artificial ice skating area.

Artis, short for Natura Artis Magistra is a zoo in the centre of Amsterdam. It is the oldest zoo of the Netherlands. In addition to the zoo, Artis has a planetarium, a geological museum and a zoological museum. The zoo was founded in 1838 by Gerard Westerman, J.W.H. Werlemann and J.J. Wijsmuller (also known as the three Ws). It is commonly referred to as Artis, because the zoo has three gates with Artis Natura Magistra written above them (as shown on the picture). Usually only the first gate was open, so people who walked through that gate, looked what was written above it and saw 'Artis', thinking that the zoo was just called Artis. Soon few knew it as Artis Natura Magistra. Artis was the zoo where the last quagga was held in captivity before it died in 1883. Plantage Kerklaan 38 Amsterdam, NL 1018CZ

Anne Frank House

For more than two years Anne Frank and her family lived in the annex of the building at Prinsengracht 263 where Anne’s father, Otto Frank, also had his business. The Van Pels family and Fritz Pfeffer hid there with them. The doorway to the annex was concealed behind a moveable bookcase constructed especially for this purpose. The office personnel knew of the hiding place and helped the eight people by supplying them with food and news of the outside world. On August 4, 1944, the hiding place was betrayed. The people in hiding were deported to various concentration camps. Only Otto Frank survived the war. Nowadays, the rooms at the Anne Frank House, though empty, still breathe the atmosphere of that period of time. Quotations from the diary, historical documents, photographs, film images, and original objects that belonged to those in hiding and the helpers illustrate the events that took place here. Anne’s original diary and other notebooks are on display in the museum. In the multimedia space, visitors can go on a “virtual journey” through the Anne Frank House, accessing background information about the people in hiding and World War Two. A contemporary exhibition is presented in the exhibition hall. Prinsengracht 267 Amsterdam, NL

It holds the largest collection of international espionage artifacts on public display. The Museum lifts the veil of secrecy on the hidden world of intelligence, exploring its successes and failures, challenges, and controversies. The Museum's mission is to create compelling exhibitions and other learning experiences that shed light on the shadow world of espionage and intelligence, educating and challenging each of us to engage critically with the complex world around us. The Museum aims to provide an objective and apolitical forum for exploring important topics such as the impact of secrecy on civil liberties, the changing role of technology in intelligence work, and the challenges of disinformation in a social media environment.
