Minjing River
Park
The Min River and its various tributaries rise in the mountains along the Fujian-Jiangxi border and flow to the East China Sea through the mountain ranges that traverse the province from southwest to northeast. The resulting flows have produced a trellislike drainage pattern, with lateral tributaries following the direction of the valleys. The name Min, though commonly used for the whole system, properly applies only to the lower course of the river below Nanping, where it cuts through the coastal ranges. Above this are the headwaters—the Futun and Jin rivers, which flow from the mountain ranges to the west—and two tributaries that drain the major interior valley basin of the province, the Sha River (flowing from the southwest through Yong’an and Sanming) and the Jian River (flowing from the northern mountains along the Jiangxi-Zhejiang border). The river’s total length is about 360 miles (580 km), and the area of its drainage basin is about 21,600 square miles (56,000 square km). The Min River was formerly of little use for navigation, though its upper tributaries above Nanping carried considerable junk traffic. In the 1950s the lower course of the river entering the sea below Fuzhou was cleared for navigation by small ships up to 80 tons. Since 1957, however, a railroad has provided a link between the central valley and the coastal ports of Xiamen (Amoy) and Fuzhou; as a result, Nanping and Sanming have become transshipment points where goods are transferred from river vessels to freight trains.

Located in an east suburb of Fuzhou City and on the north bank of the Minjiang River, Mountain Gushan Scenic Area is 17 kilometers from the city proper. It got its name for a large rock on top of the hill which is said to give reverberations like the beating of drums during storms. The main peak has an elevation of 969 meters. The scenic area consists of five attractions, namely Mountain Gushan, Gulin, Shanxi Stream, Moxi Stream and Phoenix Pool Cloud Cave. Since the Song Dynasty, Mountain Gushan has been a famous scenic area, which is one of the top 10 scenic areas in Fujian Province. Famous personalities in the past dynasties have left more than 700 carved stones on the cliff, comprising a peculiar long corridor of calligraphy and art. Yongquan Temple on Gushan Mountain is 1,000 years old, has a complex of magnificent halls and towers, known as “The Mecca of Buddhism” and “The Best Buddhist Monastery in Fujian” frequented by large numbers of worshipers.

3 Lanes and 7 Alleys
Historical landmark
27 mins
In the heart of downtown Fuzhou, instead of skyscrapers, you will find a large area of ancient residential buildings, which is a rarity in modern Chinese cities. This area is known as Sanfang-qixiang, literally, ''three lanes and seven alleys'' - a critical symbol of Fuzhou as a historic city. The district was first shaped in the late Western Jin Dynasty, and during the Song dynasty the area was home to many scholar-bureaucrats and wealthy gentry. The area prospered in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, especially in the middle Qing Dynasty, when "Three Lanes and Seven Alleys" first appeared in local history. There are about 150 ancient houses with complete courtyards, all under some measure of heritage protection. The history of Sanfang-qixiang's houses is in the very walls: the huge bricks are unknown in modern structures, and if you look at them closely, you will see tiny seashells embedded in them with the sand that was collected on the beaches to make the bricks. Also characteristic of the district is the north-south orientation of the dividing walls, the green-gray tiled roofs, the white walls and the twisting, bluestone-paved laneways. Unlike other houses in China, which have a flexible layout, the dwellings of Sanfang-qixiang are symmetrically built around a central north-south axis. Covering an area of about 40 hectares, Sanfang-qixiang is regarded by many experts as a museum of Ming and Qing dynasty architecture. The area is the scene of weekly performances of local opera by Fuzhou retirees.
