El Paso Museum of History

Museum
1 block away
The El Paso Museum of History is one of three City-operated museums, including the El Paso Museum of Art and the El Paso Museum of Archaeology, each having its own facility. The El Paso Museum of History was established in 1974 as the Cavalry Museum, but quickly served a scope and purpose beyond its title and began to function as a local history museum. In 1980 the name of the museum was officially changed to the El Paso Museum of History. In 2000, El Paso citizens were poised to explore and display its role in Texas history, passing a bond election approving $6.5 million in funding for the construction of a new two-story 44,000 sq. ft. Museum of History located in downtown El Paso’s cultural district. Staff and collections moved into the new building in early 2007 with the public opening taking place June 16, 2007. The El Paso Museum of History once again serves the largest continuous border metroplex in North America (El Paso, Texas and Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua), having a combined population of more than two million people.

El Paso Museum of Art

Museum
1 block away
Founded in 1959, the El Paso Museum of Art was born from a need to house a significant donation of European Baroque and Renaissance works to the City of El Paso by the Samuel Kress Foundation. This collection encompasses major works by Botticelli, Canaletto, van Dyck, Zurbarán, and Artemisia Gentileschi, among other Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance masters. Over time, this seed collection grew to include over 7000 works. In 1998, EPMA moved to its current location at the heart of El Paso’s Downtown Arts District, less than a mile from the bridge to Juárez. EPMA strives to ensure that it provides the Borderplex with the access to the very best art, of international interest. EPMA presents approximately a dozen exhibitions a year, with a wide scope of programming initiatives and Art School offerings. Creating an environment and resource for all audiences is reflected by EPMA’s open doors policy: general admission, school tours, and nearly all of its high-quality educational programming are free.
