Phuket war eine Zwischenstation auf der Route zwischen Indien und China, an der Seeleute Halt machten, um Schutz zu suchen. Später, als Muang Takua-Thalang, war sie Teil einer Konstellation von zwölf Städten. Phukets Emblem, unter dem es in dieser weitgehend präliterarischen Zeit anderen bekannt war, war der Hund. Während der Sukhothai-Zeit wurde Phuket mit Takua Pah in der heutigen Provinz Phang-Nga in Verbindung gebracht, einem weiteren Gebiet mit riesigen Zinnreserven. Die Niederländer errichteten während der Ayuthaya-Zeit im 16. Jahrhundert einen Handelsposten. Die nördlichen und zentralen Regionen der Insel wurden damals von den Thais regiert, und der südliche und westliche Teil wurden dem Zinnhandel übergeben, eine Konzession in den Händen von Ausländern.
