Es wurde nach Plänen von Albert Schickedanz und Fülöp Herzog in einem eklektisch-neoklassizistischen Stil zwischen 1900 und 1906 erbaut. Die Sammlung des Museums besteht aus internationaler Kunst (außer ungarischer), einschließlich aller Epochen der europäischen Kunst, und umfasst mehr als 100.000 Stücke.
