Dunamase, der Ort einer frühchristlichen Siedlung, die 842 von den Wikingern geplündert wurde, wurde zu einer der wichtigsten anglo-normannischen Hochburgen in Laois. Emo Court ist ein typisches neoklassizistisches Herrenhaus inmitten der alten Slieve Bloom Mountains. Der berühmte Architekt James Gandon, der gerade seine Arbeit am Custom House und den Four Courts in Dublin abgeschlossen hatte, begann 1790 mit der Arbeit am Emo Court. Das Gebäude, das heute steht, wurde jedoch erst etwa 70 Jahre später fertiggestellt. Das Anwesen war die Heimat der Grafen von Portarlington, bis der Unabhängigkeitskrieg sie zwang, Irland endgültig zu verlassen. Einige Jahre später zogen die Jesuiten ein, und als Noviziat der irischen Provinz beherbergte das Herrenhaus etwa 500 Auszubildende des Ordens. Ein Major Cholmeley-Harrison übernahm Emo Court in den 1960er Jahren und restaurierte es vollständig. Eines der ungewöhnlichsten Merkmale der Anlage ist ein versunkener Garten mit einem länglichen Pool, in dessen Mitte ein großer Springbrunnen steht. Das Heywood-Erlebnis beginnt neben der Gate Lodge.
